SPS that table out

Question for the SPS experts.
I know growth form of Acro vary greatly due to light and flow.
However which Acros in general form table shape beside efflos..
I am trying to find one that will table out the side of my rock formation and would like to know which ones to look out for at the LFS.
Thanks.

This is a table species, Acropora Hyancinthus. If you do get it, try to get one that is aquacultured, they have a much better survival rate. They also require high light and a strong turbulent flow that moves all around the coral, especially underneath. The polyps should whip around.

menard - sweet tank! Have a thread around on your set-up - would love to take a closer look.

Duce - Consider getting a frag off someone as many of these true tabling species are historically known to be difficult to maintain/keep alive once you get them home, specially the wild colonies. With aquaculture it is often hard to identify if it will be a true table IMO. By getting a frag you also get to see it's true shape, a good idea that it's hardy, and hopefully an idea of it's true colour. Otherwise have an eye out when a Fiji or Tonga shipment comes in.

If you go the frag route see if you can track down a piece of Dayne's pink with blue tip table, or a piece of KevinFJB's red table. Don't think I have a pic of either, and photobucket seems to be unavailable for me to check.

i have a nana thats begining to table but they are hard when it coms to keeping there coler, they tend to go and come when it comes to there purple tips but when there tips are nice and colerful its deff. one of my favorits. they need to be like aninch from the serface of your water and they have to have extreamly good flow or they will get more branch and mangey lookin.

I've found that it's important to have sufficient space for a tabling Acro to grow to it's normal form. When I moved my 'Aqua Delight' (sorry no scientific names here) Acropora from my 110 to my 400, it formed a nice, wide open table. Previously it had a pretty funky stag type structure.

Thanks all....
I tend to go AquaCulture SPS .... The only wild ones I will go for these days are the Aussies.... mine is growing like a weed...funny thing is it is encrusting the base and not growing tip wise...
I have a Planar (I just remembered) but the colony is growing more an inverted cone vs a table shape.

How can you tell the difference between a Soli and Efflo?

Seeing the pic of the Hyacinthus makes me sad..... I had one of those and lost it due to RB way back... That's a nice colony you got BTW....

I heard Kevin got really nice SPS but have never seen his tank in person. I meant to stop by Dayne's place to check out his new tank but haven't found the time - mind you I have ran into him at several LFS numerous time the irony....

Thanks, I have had it for 3 years and fragged it more than a few times. Everytime i frag it new sprouts pop out. I try to turn it every few mos to encourage more plates to come out.

Corals that tables for me has been sarmentosa, most millipora, thick branching tricolor, efflo, and hyacythus. I think the key is having your coral grow out over an open ledge or drop off. The problem with tables are that they eventually shade themself to death. Every tank is different but the limit of growth for me has been about 12" in my tank. That is when I start seeing signs of stress from shading like the base slowly rtn or an area on the colony not doing well from lack of flow.
