black sand?

I've been window peeping, looking at folks photos, (jmait has some nice ones!!). I was thinking I wanted the rockless side of the tank with dark sand, and the rock pile with lighter sand. I don't see anyone with the dark sand in their photos. Is their a reason? It seems like it would be cool, but it doesn't seem very popular...thoughts? Killingseed and souleman, your the only ones online??

its cool i thought about it, but doesnt offer and buffering. and that comes only from that sand, so to get the buffering you end up getting a mix of white and black. you can use just the black but in the long run it may not be worth it.

consuelo - It’s hard to see in the first pic but I used a layer of black sand at the bottom of my sand bed. I layered white sand on top of that. Then I add sand from TBS on top. My thought was that the area at the very bottom was a denitrifying anaerobic area and the darker the better. I did find aragonite black sand like this:

I’ve read on RC that those who use it do not like the appearance after a while. In the end it was you like!

I think your tank will be a lot brighter with the white sand.

While stationed in Panama (20 years ago!!) I got to go to a black sand beach. Kind of a bad picture but man was it hot on the feet!! Ouch, ouch!

still kickin it around...I like the look, the tank stand and canopy are very light (maple look), but the idea of more than average cleaning is a little off putting...with 2 dogs, 4 cats, 2 horsed, 40 chickens, 15 or so pigeons, 30 poison dart frogs, two giant day geckos, and a leopard tortoise in a pear tree, I do enough **** patrol.....

Caribsea make a black and white aragonite....Indo Pacific is what they call it.

I just had a customer here that was converting his black sand to natural//white.....he was tired of the black. Strayvoltage is correct regarding the white producing a brighter enviroment that Corals love.

True, the black sand will show all, lol. That Indo Pacific aragonite is sweet, but kinda pricey. If I could do it all over again, I would probably use the more coarse sand. The sugar fine never seems to settle out. And if u get a sleeper goby, all your rock will be coated, lol.
