Red face Oly-oly-oxen-free

I'm going to show my age. I'm not naive enough to think that life was perfect for everyone back in these times. But I'll admit it. I miss much of my childhood and enjoy an occasional trip down memory lane. Yes, it's corny. So what!

Not corny at all. I remember a good deal of that stuff, and it WAS fun growing up. I'm soon to be 47 but have fabulous memories of my childhood, friends, pastimes, and just a slower pace.
A couple more;
Mc Donalds had yet to hit "one million sold", and only had a walk up window.
TV went off at midnight with the Indian Head test pattern
We had three channels, four on a clear night when Canada might come in.
We didn't have as much, but in many ways we had a lot more. Thanks for posting that. I like it!

Ahh, many good memories.
The one about the "horrible pink slab of chewing gum that came with a pack of baseball trading cards" gave me perfect recollection of that powdery bubble gum flavor.
How about candy dots on a strip of paper, the excitement and responsibility of checking out a library book, and Saturdays where you were gone from morning until dark (and your parents didn't know where you were, nor did they worry...you were just "out playing").

oh man!! i remember almost ALL of that stuff!! talk about a trip down memory lane, whew!

what a shame our kids can't experience the same things. the hustle and bustle of the real world sure does put a damper on the little every day things we "old" people took for granted.

thanks for that link, it's a day brightener!! nina

OK, turn off the site's music and substitute Queen's These are the days of our lives. It might just make you cry.

I wish I had the power to bring back Freddie Mercury. What a voice we lost.

I still cry for him every so often. The day he died I filled up the tub with bubble bath, lit a thousand candles, turned out the lights, cranked up the music and just laid and cried.

But to rephrase your line...

" I am so blessed to have lived to hear Freddie Mercury sing. What a voice we heard!"

Thanks.
Remeber going around the neighborhood collecting soda bottles from you neighbors to take down to the local store to get the deposit back so you could buy a coke? Now days they call it begging and you got to go to some "recycle" place to get your voucher for the money.
Remember riding your bycicle WITHOUT a helment?
AHHH, life was simple then.

We still leave our keys in the ignition and the doors unlocked. Occasionally in town though we will take the keys out of the ignition... Gotta love rural life...

Though I'm a lot younger than most of you guys (18), I still had many of the experiences listed on that website, I think because I was born into a rural area (and my family was a little behind on the times).

Same here. We don't even lock our doors when we go on vacation.

*sigh* Thanks! I passed that on to a bunch of my aging decrepit friends.

Unfortunately most of that I remember as the "new" thing.

I miss the cartoons I grew up on - The 80s had some of the best cartoons ever - recycled animation scenes they used in every single episode... and I didn't even realize it until I turned 13-14. The end of that silly cold war made for some good toon plots

Oh man - I remember those things... Really good times...

Remember when it was okay to shag your secretary and mistreat minorities. Man, the good old days.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

In case anyone is offended by the above comment - I apologize in advance.

Sarcasm is difficult to understand and interpret sometimes. For me - saying that the two things were "good times" was a way of showing some of the "brushed under the carpet" things from back in the day, that the link failed to mention.

As many of you may know, sexism and racism were rampent in the fifties. Perhaps my attempt at humor was a way to remind people of that fact, without a political or heated discussion about the more difficult realities of America during that troubled time.

END PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT.

This has been a test of the bannation broadcasting system. Had this been a real emergency, the aforementioned post would have been deleted and the words "moved on" would be viewable under my name. We thank you for your cooperation. beep................... beep..........................

Jamesurq, you're absolutely correct, and I alluded to exactly that by my "not naive" disclaimer. Much of those problems remain to be solved today. But I don't want this thread to go on a political tangent.
