starting to get worried

I am getting a little worried. I think both my trimmas are dead (may have starved, they wouldt get close enough to the food to eat it). my shroom looks dead, my leather is unhappy, my zoas seem a little annoyed but besides that are okay, and algae has covered my tank (diatoms). I did a 5g water change yesterday, and am planning on doing a 1-3g WC today. what else can I do? I am planning on going to get some carbon soon, and am testing levels now (ammonia and nitrate, if they read okay will test nitrite). what could have caused this? I am hoping to get my skimmer started today. will post levels soon, thanks.

it about a week since set up, however I had the rock for about 5 months in another tank, and I dont have too much in there, been adding things slowly each week. there is
1 serpent star
1 skunk cleaner (has already lived through 1 crash, not even fased)
1 zoa
1 leather
1 (I think dead) shroom
2 trimmas (I think may be dead)
10 astrea snails
11 nassasaria snails
1 cerith snail
8 dwarf hermits
everything has been fine until I came back from school yesterday. I cant read the ammonia (came out wierd), but nitarte looks about 10, can you say 3g water change? lol. will change water and add carbon, then update. oh and thanks a ton for the quick reply!

i think its definately way too much way too fast

thats a lot of stuff to be put in all in one week
i would say to wait another week or two before you think about putting anything else into the tank, let the tank take its course and add things slowly, espicially in a tank this size

srry, I meant 3 weeks, typo. I have been adding as slowly as I could, and the LR should be able to handle the bio load, being about 5 months since the cycle ended (had it in my 29g before this). I am planning on waiting 2-3 weeks before I even think about adding anything else. I am going to do 1ish gallon WC every other day until level are better, then settle down to 3g every 3 days, and 10g every other week.

Did you use water from the other tank too? How about the sand?

Take it slow. The rock being in another tank 5 months doesn't count for much. The tank as a whole is not ready for that many animals. Not after a week.

I agree that it appears you've been adding too much too fast. Also, how have you been acclimating your livestock to your new tank?

even after 3 weeks that is too much? hmm...

I have been temp acclimating for about 30 min, then adding a small amount of water to the bag every 5-10 min for 20 min. for the star I did a 1 hr temp acclimation and a 2-3 hr slow drip acclimation. the corals had a 1 hr temp acclimation and then water was added to the bag every 10 min for 30 min.

the water is slightly cloudy today, and I have decided to do a 6g water change today and a 12g water change tomarrow. will try to get the skimmer on tonight.

You might not want to do all that water changing. IF your trying to cycle the tank that will never do. Sound like maybe the tank hasn't had time to totally cycle. it won't if you keep removing the old water and adding new. Take the coral back to your LFS and let the tank cycle. 3 weeks in nothing in cycling a tank. I gave my tank 3 months befor adding anything.

I'd be really leary about the sand. though I'm not an expert, you would think there would be a lot of dead stuff in it from sitting in a bag (assuming you bought bagged live sand) all that time.

I've set up new tanks from existing rock but always used sand from the same existing tank. There's a fine line between it being considered a tank transfer, and a new setup. You might be skirting the wrong side of that line.

But as others have said, take it slow, some things are going to have to run their course, don't go crazy on the WC's but don't outright stop them either. Test your params as often as you deem useful and good luck

the tank looks better today, will be doing a very large water change on monday. I am going to wait 2 weeks before I look to start buying new stuff. theri was nothing dead in the sand, sugar fine sand was dry, the stuf in the fuge was from my other tank, but most was washed off because of various reasons. lights will be left off over the weekend. thanks for the help, hopfully everything is okay when I get back.

I would have to agree with the too much, too fast answers. I would stop adding things and remove the obviously dead or dying items. If you have a skimmer, use it and don't go overboard with the water changes. In a tank that size, it is very possible to change too much water. You would be taking out the bacteria that's trying to get settled in to complete the cycle. I'd say to just let it settle a bit...

Looks like you may have dodged a bullet, Moonstream! I'd wait another 4 weeks before adding anything new.

I have decided to redirect my attention to my 2.5g nano, and try to get that running soon.
