How Much do you Tip the Pizza Delivery Guy?

Last night we all ordered in pizza at a friends house, and my friend says you're supposed to tip the delivery guy 20-25% because of gas prices, and he wanted to tip the guy about 14.00 on a 62.00 bill. I told him he was nuts and that a 6.00 - 7.00 dollar tip is plenty even for a bigger order, and the pizza place was less than 5 minutes away.

Am I a cheapskate.....how much are you supposed to tip the pizza delivery guy??

$2 a pie. Delivery place is 4 blocks away. And they already add a Delivery Charge because of gas prices.

We either go out or make it at home. Mrs. Beer was a manager at a pizza restaurant when we met.....

Having helped manage a pizza place through highschool and several years after, part time, I can say that the normal tip for the driver is less than 5 dollars, and is usually the change from the next dollar amount when rounded up.

Personally, I tip about 5 dollars.

Last time I ordered pizza, I was getting out of the shower as the pizza guy got here. The roommate let him since it's hot outside as of late, and I walked out not exactly clothed not expecting a stranger to be standing there.

So, I gave an extra nice tip so he wouldn't press charges for trauma and emotional distress

Try again. I am a former pizza restaurant manager and I delivered quite a few pizzas. The delivery charge goes straight to the store. The driver does not see any of it. Ever. It never adds into the driver's income in any way, shape or form. They say its due to gas prices to get you to pay it. Do not base your tip on that charge.

All that being said, $2 per pie is not bad.

Not here. The drivers get 50% of the del charge here to offset the higher cost of gas.

Our drivers always claimed mileage. 17.5 cents a mile back then. It was not uncommon to have 120 miles on Friday/Sat nights.

My family usually gets a pie and an appy. Total cost is $15-18. I usually give 3 or 4 bucks.

I guess it depends on the company/franchise. None of the major chains in Texas do this. They do give the driver a certain dollar amount per delivery, but it is usually less that $1. I'd be surprised if any drivers ever make more than $50 on that fee.

Even if they do get part of the deliver charge, it should never factor into your tip. For that matter, neither should the pizza arriving late/cold/wrong toppings/etc factor in. Its not the driver's fault if the store is understaffed or poorly run. Call and request a discount for the pizza. Tip the driver the same.

No chains or franchises here Mark. Everything is locally owned. The only reason I posted the del charges is that it is something that took affect a while back when gas prices shot up. The original post stated the 25% tip was because of gas prices.

The pizza place where I worked in high school was a little private place and in the rich area of Indianapolis. Generally, the norm was about $5-$10, but a lot of them tipped $20+. It was rare if I ever left that night with less than $300 in tips in my pocket.

Since the Hut started adding a 15% delivery charge to every order I give em like $.40 or whatever rounds up to the next dollar. Before the charge was added I was usually very generous with maybe a $4-$5 tip on a $20 order. Not no more.
