Is it a big deal when the device prompts you to turn but it doesn't give you the street name and just says "turn right in 500 feet"? Also, is there a way to update this thing with current maps and data? I've look at so many GPS units over the last few hours my brain is fried.
The voice navigator on my Voyager says it outloud and displays an arrow and street name on the screen above the map.

It speaks a warning when you're getting close like "Prepare to turn left on Arizona Street in point four miles."

That's one thing that I don't like about the Tom Tom. It doesn't say street names, just tells you to make a right or left or whatever. It does repeatedly warn me from 2 miles out that I have to turn though.

And when you miss the turn because you think you're smater than it, it will recalculate...

When I did that, it first said "Make the first legal U-turn on Tacoma Street in point one miles." When I drove past Tacoma it said "Recalculating route... Prepare to turn left on Martin Luther King Memorial Parkway in point six miles."

Not bad for a cell phone!

"There is a better route available" I had to get the woman's voice off there, it was annoying.

I've been trying to make it quiet for ~20 years.

We got a Magellan Roadmate (2200t) in May. It's been pretty good on longer trips. Directions are clear, and you can choose things like "most use of freeways" or "least use of freeways" when you're mapping the route.

Like digital cameras, they bring out several each month, and prices drop fast. What we bought then for $300 is now $150.

Did you experience problems with it on shorter trips? Is it easy to use?

I switched mine to the male voice it just kept saying don't worry I know a short cut.

On the Australian accent when you get off the rout it should say...no worries mate I'll recalculate.

Anyone with a Garmin-- when you deviate from the route and the lady's voice says "Recalculating", doesn't it sound like she's a tad irritated?

ROTFL...before I changed it to a male's voice I had it with my friend and we did that, and she told me she thought it had a bad attitude...

It's fine on shorter trips, just annoying when you're around your own town and you know where you're going

The restaurant/store/ATM/gas station finder is pretty good.
