as ur tank matures all u will have to do is clean the algae on the glass, just give it more time u wont have that problem down the road, clean up crew should be enough.

You guys should only use Chemi-Clean when you need to. It may occur about once a year perhaps.

That's great news Doug, I'm glad things are back to normal. Personally, I'm a big fan of biological stability v. chemical dependancy. Occasional, emergency fixes with chemicals are ok, but prolonged use can lead to serious consequences in the future. IMO, y'all did things just right this time using chemicals as a last resort.

Best,
Phil

Yep, happy thanksgiving. Can't wait to see some new pictures of your tank.

I am out of town and someone is watching my setup and feeding the fish as well as all the other animals in the house. I hope all goes well.

While going through some pictures today I noticed a couple of startling shots of one of our zoo colonies before and after the cyano fiasco. They certainly have a lot more room now

Check 'em out...

I'm waiting for our BTA (Fingers) to come back out before taking another full tank shot. About 5 or so days ago he tucked himself away in his hole and has stayed there without coming back out. He looks just fine in the semi-compacted state and the clowns are still hanging in the tentacles even though they are in a cave. Fingers looks fine, as I said, but is it normal for them to hide away like this for days on end? Nothing has changed except for the tank being a lot healthier now that the cyano is gone.

Wow, what a difference. That sure was a bad outbreak of cyano.

Dang Doug.. For future reference.. get a long piece of flex tubing and one of those large media bags. Rubber band the media bag on one end with it in your sump and the other in " in your tank" start your siphon with a pump or power head and vacumme that crap away. I used to keep a "Dummy" ehiem canister around to run polyfilter in to help with this as well.. It just happens sometimes no matter how hard you try to prevent it.....

Things look better .. Im happy for yah ,, but not near as happy as you are I bet..

Nathan,

That's exactly how we did it... a siphon hose with a couple of nylon bags attached to one end and then placed into the sump. As we siphon the detritus gets caught in the bag but the water stays in the system. Unfortunately a lot of small stuff gets around the tank that way but we manage to get the majority of the big stuff. A couple 10-15% water changes in the next day or so along with protein skimming and a bit of carbon gets the system back to normal in no time.

And yes, we are very happy the tank is looking so good at the moment The siphoning and scrubbing with a small tooth brush took us about 3-4 hours... but it was well worth it!

And don't forget the Chemi-Clean... it really was the final stroke. However we don't want to resort to chemicals whenever there's a problem. But we had no choice this time since the bloom was way out of control.

That looks much better.

I picked up a BTA for my son's tank, and it is mostly in a shrunken state since it arrived. *sigh*

Allright Doug! That doesn`t even look like the same spot. Sometimes you just gotta do what you just gotta do.
I`m sure that was some quality time spent with the family also.

Hello all!

The tank has remained cyano/algae free now since the great Chemi-Clean event. The cleanliness of the LR and sandbed and overall coral health have improved immensely! We're running carbon (bag in sump bubble trap) now 24x7. I try and change it out every three weeks or so. The Cheatomorpha has really taken off and is very healthy. Even Fingers (our BTA) has come out again and looks very vibrant!

All in all things are looking great and we couldn't be happier... again Now that we're satisfied things are stable we'll start adding new corals, etc.

I'll get some new photos here later today or tomorrow.

We've been a bit delayed at this end... pictures hopefully tomorrow. Things have been very busy for us here lately with work and getting ready for Christmas. I have some down time tomorrow and will snap a few of the full tank as well as some showing the Montis and how well they are doing!

Thanks for your patience!

I'm sorry for the derail, but I've got an important question that nobody in the Lighting Forum has thought enough of to answer and I need some experienced advice.

What is the closest MH and PC bulbs can be to eachother? I have two options with the lighting configuration over my 20g. I can either have the bulbs parallel with the PC on either side of the MH socket, or I can have the MH perpendicular to the PC bulbs. If the bulbs are parallel then each has their own aluminum reflector and a couple inches between for insulation. If the MH is T to the PC bulbs then it's only .5 inches away from the PC directly across the middle of the fixtures.

I've been re-reading this thread lately and saw Marc's post about the T-5 over the 55 and how they're far enough from the MH that they won't get "cooked" by the bulbs. Even with a fan blowing over the bulbs, will the heat generated by the 250w MH be a signficant factor on the life and output of the PC, and vice versa?

Lighting coverage is the reason I ask this. With the PC and MH T to eachother there is even lighting over the whole system. When them = to eachother there is an area of shadow where there is noticably less light from the MH bulb. There's still MH light getting there, but the shadow line is annoying and isn't as aesthetically pleasing.

This is the last issue that needs to be resolved before I can add the sand, rock, and water. After four months of planning and working on this project I'm starting to get impatient.

Thank you for your help guys.

God bless,
Phil
