adding a new tang
ok after 8 months of searching across this country, i have finally found a black longnose tang (Zebrasoma rostrotum) that is 3.5"(thank you ming and jolleen). he will be placed in a 125g 6' tank with a 95x in tank turnover (high flow).
now my question. in the tank for about 5-6 mo is a powder blue tang that makes sure every new addition knows he is there. in all cases, the showing stops after the first day but i have never tried adding a new tang. i would like your suggestions on the best way to add the new, very hard to find, pretty expensive fish without removing the pbt. here is my game plan. it arrives saturday and i plan on reaquascaping the tank that morning. when it arrives and after my 2.5 hr acclimation procedure. i will be turning off my mhs, leaving only the vhos. at that point i plan on adding the new tang, obviously keeping a close eye on him for as long as possible. i toyed with idea of adding a pair of very small yellow tangs(temp) or of putting a nori clip on each side of the tank to keep the pbt distracted. any opinions? suggestions? i have searched long and hard for this fish so if i must remove the pbt then i will but the girlfiend is quite attached to him so i "want" to keep him. thanks all for you help. p.s. the two tangs will be the same size as each other.

i also added a small blank tang (3") lately. what i did was put him in a med size container with a lid (the one use for carrying small animals/fish) and put it in your tank. i aslo have a 1 black tang (6"),1 powder blue, 1 hippo, 1 yellow, 1 achillies, and 1 clown tang in the same tank and they are doing fine so far. i would put the container in until you see that the pbt would try to stop attacking the black tang. then it's ok to release it. byt i'm planning to add another black tang (4.5") to my tank again.

I hope you have a 500+ gallon tank! Everythings fine now, but I suspect that Clown Tang will put an end to that..they are known for terrorizing other fish Good luck

They are of different Genus so it should be fine. Some aggression at first is to be expected. I wouldn't put any more Tangs in a 125

no real plans on more tangs. the yellow wouldve been temporary to disperse any possible aggression. thanx for ur opinions. any more? ive been looking so long and hard for this fish so i want to give him the best possible chance to be "happy".

Make a box out of eggcrate, secure it in one of the tank corners and put the new one in it for a week. That way your pbt will get used to seeing the new one.
It seems to work |
