Marc, I was told this was a curlyq anemone but from what searching I have done I don't think so. The thing is huge with a voracious appetite and he will not stay put. Tonight he started his "float about" and ended up getting stuck on the intake grid for my closed loop. He will survive but he was wounded. I am at a pint where I'm afraid I might be doing him more harm than good.

My photo skills, or lack thereof, don't show the cool colors of this creature. Deep purple at the base and bright green tips.

Rod, there is no way to say for sure without seeing the underside of the anemone. Can you do that? Is the foot red and on the underside of the disc is there white dots/warts on it?

All that aside it looks like a Long Tentacle Anemone, Macrodactyla doreensis.

Yes on the underside it appears there are warts or white bumps. The foot is more of a lighter peach color or at times (when expanded) a creamy color. I'll try to post a pic showing some of the underside here in a sec . . .

Okay here we go.

FIRST, I apologize for the picture quality. (I hate it when people say that but it is what it is)
SECOND, well, I apologize for each picture.

Okay the first one shows the little white warts on a piece of the underside that it has folded onto itself.

I guess this photo is not so bad but it just a working photo. Anyway it's a good shot of the shoe as it starts it's float to happier waters.

That's Green Hair Algae on the right!

Looks like an LTA to me as well, but I asked Amy to chime in.

Those are prefect. It's like I thought, a Macrodactyla doreensis.

Amy, Marc, thanks for the info, especially the info on the hair algae. Of all places for the picture to be taken. I had a HUGE hair algae bloom a few months back (7) but tank maturity and snails made short work of that, except that one spot. Nothing will touch it. I pick up a snail and place it on the patch and she leaves. Oh well.

Thanks again for the info!

This doesn't look exactly like what you've pictured and ID as Caulacanthus ustulatus, but looks enough like to make me think it is in the same genus. I've been looking for ID and control for a long time, and your site has come closer than any. What do you think? It is brittle, breaks up and spreads like wildfire. Appeared on FL LR several weeks after setting up the tank and is now every where. It smothers corals and nothing I have will eat it. I spend hours every couple of weeks removing it by hand. I some times win a battle but I'm losing the war. This is a great site, keep adding to it.

Yours is definitely different from the red algae I obtained. It too is invasive, but I put it in my refugium. It didn't last long for whatever reason.

I would send a PM to Samala and see if she knows what you've got there. And let me know. I'd be happy to add yours to my Algae section.

Is it like sponge, or is it leathery? Have you tried a toothbrush?

If it is a sponge, it is fine. If it is leathery, it can be somewhat invasive. It is sometimes referred to as Turkey Liver.

Either way, let's find out what it is. Clean your hands well, rinse them even better, and touch it.

Marc you are going to have to change the name of this thread, although the "over" part still applies I guess. It's guys like you that make this site the great place it is.

I posted a seperate thread before I realized there was this nice thread.

Got a 10g setup for seeding of some of my DIY rock. Went to the LFS and purchased three pounds of small rubble. Its been setup for one week now.

I've noticed this little larva like object. It moves around and swells up like it wants to bust open.

I'm not sure what it is, but can you tell me if that stuff under it is its waste? Is that a mouth on the right end? Does it change in appearance? Does it crawl, or grab on to anything?
