Very Cool I think that aquaculture facilities like this will help save our natural reefs by lowering our reliance on the oceans for corals and fish.

yeah, but it is much more effecient to do it in a greenhouse without using a ton of burnt coal a day to power lights
Also, our planets reefs aren't irrepairably damaged by the pet trade. They are damaged by commercial fishing and industrial waste!

I wish I could agree with you about the fact that a gh is the best way to grow coral, it just aint so. Well it might be one of the best ways, its just not cost effective

redox, why do you think so about GH coral growth?

growth is good ,I just hate to pay my power bill every month. If I could find a cheap way to keep the temps down or even consitant , it would be helpful. There are many different ways all of which cost money to operate. Dont get me wrong I love my setup but the electricity costs are high. I do think these guys are gonna find out how corrosive a setup like that is to a building. Im sure they are leasing that space. The salt will rust everything. But to answer you ? RR yes growth is good and I am seeing it before my eyes

redox, wether in a GH where your light/heat comes from the sun, or in an enclosed building where your light/heat comes from banks of 250 and 400 watt MH, you're going to have to cool it down somehow. To me evap cooling seems more efective and less corrosive in a GH that is meant to have a consistently high humidity, as well as the ability to easily vent hot, humid air out in large quantity's if need be.
If a GH were able to be built more energy efficient, while still remaining cost effective that would be the best of both worlds. Or maybe hybrid GH's Where you are using cinderblock and foam insulation for most of your sidewalls, and glass/poly for the top 1/3 of the walls and roof. I don't really know!! but IMO a GH has got to be better than that closed up room in that picture!!

Wow that is sweet! That would be awesome to see or even own a system like that. I'd hate to be the investor or the dude paying for it though. I'm sure it will eventualy pay off though.

JCTewks has a really good point on the idea of a North Wall greenhouse, which is basically what redox has. This is definitely better in the long run to a hoop house. I am working on trying to come up with some numbers as to whether a light bank or heating/cooling is more effective. My guess is that up to a certain size lighting is the way to go, once you get to a certain size/footprint I think greenhouse is the way.

if you'll READ the thread, you'll see that these pics were posted and the thread was started by someone who had visited the facility and has no part in the setup or operation of it.

Try Aquatic Ecosystems for the tubs.
