Baby Vlamingi Tangs...
Hello, just looking to hear some stories from people who have had success raising a vlamingi tang from a very small size. I just acquired a small vlamingi tang (3" or so) and I was wondering what its chances of survival are and how likely it is to do well starting from that size?
I have a 120 gal now, but will be upgrading to a 280 in about 6 months. |

if it is healthy and eating I don't see why it wouldn't thrive for you.

I've just read that small naso family tangs (<4" or so) have a low survival rate in captivity and that its always better to buy larger.
The one I have is very healthy looking, but I'm just looking for stories from other people that have had sucess with fish this small. |

I bought my Vlamingii around the same size, and he grew very fast. Within a 8 month period he grew from 3" to around 8". They are pretty much bullet proof in regards to avoiding disease. You should have no trouble keeping him, but you may want to upgrade to 580 instead of a 280. Mine recently passed, I found him laying on the floor in front of my tank. Goof luck with it.

So sorry to hear about your fish. Thats amazing how fast it grew for you. If I can afford it I will get the biggest tank possible. We're moving this summer and once settled in to the new place, I'm upgrading to as large as I can.

I would also shoot for a tank in the 8ft range, they get very large. Very good looking fish though any pictures?

HI
Get a bigger tank FAST! From 4 to 8.5 " in 3 months in a 10 x 5 x 3.5 ft tank. The fish was eventually moved to a public aquarium Not calling the tang police, but I see these fishes way too often in LFS. How many people have tanks of a suitable size for fishes like that? Jens |

I would suspect that most of these fish end up in waaay to small of a tank, become stunted, and die an early death. These fish have been reported to live as long as 45 years. The ocean or a public aquarium is really the best place for these guys.

Sorry, I don't have any pics right now and I am currently out of town.
However, with regards to the above comments on size of tank I totally agree now that I will certainly need to get a much larger tank than my planned upgrade if I want to keep these fish. If I can not get at least an 8foot by 4foot tank I will find the fish a more suitable home. |
