A search on the topic will yield some critical information. By in large, this fish is considered one of the most (if not the most) difficult of the larger angels to maintain. Many refuse to eat and simply waste away. I'm not sure if any statistical studies have ever been attempted, but my guess is that less than 10 percent of those collected survive in home aquaria. They are stunning fish but probably a fish best left in the ocean.

Hello my friend, i live in indonesia. Yes that fish is definitely is not for the beginners, even advance hobbist are not lucky enough to keep that beautifull fish. I've been try to keep this fish about 7 years ago (but grey species), it live in the tanks for more than 2 months without eating anything and not losing weight, i don't know what he eat. Then because i do respect fish soul, so i release that fish to the ocean few days later.
But recently (about two months ago exactly), i bought another regal (red sea species), because i've been read in many article that this fish can be keep right now if we can choose the right and healthy species (choose only red sea species). Choose species between 3-41/2 inche, smaller species is too weak, bigger species are difficult to seduce with substitute food. Try it with open mussel/clam, crush crab. Believe it or not it work for my regal, and even right now it eat most kind of pellets. But if you still brand new in keeping angel fish, please don't buy this fish until you have several years of experience in keeping angel fish. |

My regal angel eats opened live steamer clams, also I have Moorish idols (2) and a Golden masked butterfly and they all eat live steamer clams, they also pick at the rock but haven't seen them eat from the water column.
