Non-scientific method of determining reefsafe plastics...
I've heard "Brute" Rubbermaid jugs don't leach into the water... however I noticed some Brutes are Recyclable #4 and some are #2 plastic.
I began putting each type of trash can at HD on my head and breathing deeply. #2 smelled the worst and stung my nose (#2 is like milk jugs) #5 smelled some (#5 is like butter jug plastic) #4 smelled the least (#4 is like ketchup jug plastic) SOOO, are all safe? is #4 the "most" reef safe since it's on a majority of Brute containers? Would putting each into a tank and watching coraline coverage growth help determine safety?

Nice!
I'm still confused as to which are "safe" and which might "leach" into tanks. Based on the descriptions, 2, 4, 5 all appear to be safe as they are in food/consumer products? Others also list food/consumer packaging so it makes me think all are safe - so do any leach?

What do you plan to do with the containers? When used for water storage I think the turn over is usually so fast there is not enough time for anything to seriously leach into the water. For instance if you store top off water in it for a couple of days to a week I don't think there is much if any danger with any food grade plastic. I am not sure about putting the material into your tank long term, but it should be ok (food grade).

I was thinking
- remote DSB - RO/DI water storage (i.e. the RO unti just keeps the 40g bucket full 24/365) The issue is the spot I have for both is very narrow so I can't use normal trash cans for either so I'm looking at other plastic containers (narrow ones)

You could always line the container with a water safe liner if worst comes to worst. I bet it wouldn't cost much for a small durable liner and then you could put it into any container.
