Lots of thick, heavy, scratch resistant glass.

(scratch resistant in relation to acrylic)

....that's what i'd thought you say. When you start getting into that much pressure and weight...IMO, strength integrity is more of a concern than a couple of scratches....go with acrylic. lighter and stronger bond! My last 360gallon acrylic (which i sold last year) was running for over 9yrs, and to this day is still as clear as day one.

Acrylic is a lot more scratch resistant than you think and for me, not enough to validate buying glass tank of this size.
Thanks for your comment.

BTW, just curious, who makes 800+gallon Glass tanks?

Wow!! How many sq ft is the entire house?

Oh.. why dont you powder coat the frame? Later down the road.. water might spill here and there.. and may rust it (unless you clean it right away). Or my moisture/evaporation. Powder coating it will prevent those problems. Just a thought. cant wait to see more updates.

Yea I have a tenecor too. Just be careful and dont rush when cleaning the viewable sides.

That was marine fiberglass and while resin was still semi-wet it was sprayed with sand. I know the person who fabricated this background (Aquatic Technologies) is still in business but not sure where his company move to. I got this tank about 12+yrs ago. My friend now owns it as a FOWLR setup.

Very nice so far. Your work seems to be moving alone quite nicely.
I do have some questions though. Why did you decide to ahve so little space open at the top of the tank? From the dimensions you have in the CAD picture, it seems the openings are relatively small and constricting. It is a large tank, however, it may prove to be a challenge to keep the top cool so it doesn't crack if using a lot of halides to light up the tank.

Alberto,
It will be an open top, no canopy, will have plenty of fans and ventilation to keep cool. Your right though, the openings could be bigger....not for concern of heat/cracking but for ease of access. Oh well, to late now.

Thx.

Nice setup Ted!
Do you have stocking plans? I suppose at that size it's not too much of a concern (hehe, I think you could fit one of everything!), but I'm just curious as to your plans?

Mac, Thanks for the compliment
....hmmmm stocking plans? mostly a variety of sps's on the upper half of the tank. I will be attempting (with some help from a fellow aquarist) to create some artificial rock caves and ledges on the bottom half of the tank for less light dependent specimens. As for fish, Maybe a school of 20+ bluegreen chromis or Anthias.....not sure yet, haven't commited to either one yet.

.....and for the Tang police, I'll be putting a one of every tang in. ....just joking, I really like the sohal, I know that tang will be in for sure. I really love that fish!

Thx,
~Ted

Well according to them you could possibly keep a Sohal in it while it was a juvie but youd have to get a bigger tank later on.....

What other fish are you planning? Any clams?

I don't think my wife would let me get a bigger tank than 770gallons. If that sohal starts to get stressed because my tank is to small, i'll pull a nemo and put it back to the ocean.
...just kidding.

I really don't know what exact fish is going in except for the Sohal.
No clams.

Thx.

Hehehe, I know what you're feeling. I posted a pic of my Sailfin the first time he hit the 230 and told 'em to eat their hearts out! A friend of mine has an Orange Shoulder that's very pretty, but I think the one I got is going to be enough for a while for me. I've got a small gaggle of chromis' however, and find them hardy and fun to watch. I have 2 Blue Carribean and 4 Blue/Green Chromis. Eat anything I toss in there, and are even eating out of my hands now (~3 months?).
Have you thought about trying for a zoned tank? Getting all your fish/corals/etc. from the same region? Like an all Carribean reef, etc. Well, not Carribean, because the corals all suck , but you get the idea, maybe an all Red Sea reef!

I love schooling fish, 25 purple fire fish would look really cool zipping about.

That 360 looks like a space ship. I like it.
