deep sand bed for refigium

I'm in the process of building a 30 gallon refigium and plan on having a deep sand bed. Is there a benefit of using mud vs sand, or using a combination of both? If I use both sand and mud, would you mix it all together or layer it?

Thanks!!!

I have a 30 gall. fuge w/ deep sand (4" +) and a plenum under the sand. this system has been great for my tank. I have also thinking about adding mud to the fuge do to articles saying how well it works. Walt Smith International has a new mud out that is called refugium booster which is to add to existing sand fuges, so I would think you can mix the two.
