Don't use aluminum based phosphate removers in a reef tank. GFO - The F stands for Ferric which is a form of iron.

It's too early for me to say. My tank has been historically underfed to keep my phosphate in check. My corals have always been a little pale and I decided it was due to the nutrients being too low. I recently upped my feeding to daily, sometimes 3x/day and added a phosphate reactor at the same time (I used to feed 2 to 3 times/week). My colors are getting stronger and I have not noticed any increase in the growth of bad algaes.

I've used both Phosban and rowaphos. The Rowaphos seemed to work so good it seemed to shock my corals.

I use Phosar HC. I switched over from Rowa and my levels have come down even more. I know there are too many variables to prove that one works better, but I am happy with the results so far.

I've just switched from PhosBan to DrsF&S housebrand GFO, and it works fine (and is a lot cheaper; next time I'll get the 2-part site's version). From what I've read, there are very few manufacturers of the stuff worldwide so the odds are good that all the aquaria manuf's get it from the same place anyways.

That's the case with many products. Carbon is another one that comes to mind.

Slightly off topic but relevant - In my industry, we use a lot of molasses. Recently I tracked down our supply chain to find out that even though we had more than a dozen suppliers, they were all getting it from the same two production plants.

I believe you. Many people have indeed used Aluminum Oxide with success. I decided to use GFO instead due to these words written by Randy Holmes Farley:

"Unfortunately, aluminum oxide is not completely insoluble in seawater. I have shown experimentally that aluminum can be released from PhosGuard™, and I have also shown that adding the same amount of released aluminum back into an aquarium can irritate corals, causing them to retract their polyps and otherwise shrink. That effect mirrors what many aquarists reported (prior to this test) as a side effect of using these media. Rinsing the solids before use can reduce the likelihood that small aluminum-containing particulates are released into the aquarium, but it does not prevent the solubilization of aluminum ions from the solid surfaces."

I tried what I think was, the Kent Marine Phosphate media, which yes, I bought at PETCO..... and it was terrible. I heard ROWAPHOS (sp?) is good and the TLF brand is good as well. Any thoughts?

I first used phosban, then switched to roawphos since it clumps less. I am going to try Phosar next.
