I have read that using the Iron Ferric Oxide while running UV can cause problems. I was trying to find the article and could not seem to though.
Also, I use only about 80% recommended because of the effect on ALK as we discussed. I use PURA phoslock. Big Als has it for cheap and the others will price match. |

My previous batch of GFO was that Pura brand. I bought it at my LFS, it was cheap and GFO is GFO. I was ticked off to find out how little was in the container though... like a bag of chips, lots of air. It was my own fault, I should have checked the weight on the label.
My fault or not, I won't buy that brand again

Hyper, I know exactly what you mean. The first stuff I bought was the Phosban from TLF, and it is still my least favorite.

From the many GFO threads I've read it seems like there is no definitive information that points to one being far better than another although some very limited comparison tests have been run. I've used Phosban, Phosar and Twoparts and all seem to get the job done. |

Thats a good article, Ive read opinions from other threads about the Aluminum issues a while back, but its good that RH did some experiments with the topic. Id rather be safe than sorry so I stick with Rowaphos.

I fill a 2 little fishies reactor about 1/3. With flow the media fills about 1/2 the reactor.

Mano,
You have not noticed an Alk drop, or unusual Alk consumption because of using that much? I have a similar size tank and when I used that much my Alk went way down. Enough to cause a week or two of loss of color. |

mine is about 1.5 inches of media...and my alk has dropped a bit also...I had to turn up the reactor...what causes this?

Just picked up a phosban reactor and some phosar HC.
Total system is just under 100 gal. How much would you recommend I start out with? |
#96
|
|||
|
|||
1 gram per gallon to start is what I have read. Then boost it up to 2g per gallon once your system is used to it.
Just do a search and you should find the information handily.

I would start out with less than one gram per gallon. I started out with about 1/3 of a gram per gallon. Watched alk for a few days, then added another 1/3. In a week or two, I'll add the last 1/3.
I'd rather be safe than sorry. Good luck. |
