Im interested in some results people have achieved. ie: reduction of PO4 in ppm., how much they are using per gallon if other than recommended, etc....

BTW, who makes a good P04 test that isn't comparing vague color charts. A titration kit would be the best for me. Suggestions?

They're expensive. Hanna colorimeter. Merck makes a comparable unit too. They were discussed in the GFO - How good is it thread (THANKS JETCAT USA!).

I use TLF GFO in a reactor. Also have a Hanna meter and like it much more than reagent based test kits but you also pay the price.

That's what I use. I bought the pellets because I planned on running them in a sock. I ended up making a reactor though so I might as well have bought the granular version.

thanks just deciding what to use to reduce phosphates???
PhosAR HC has a greater phosphate removal capacity than other products. It works just as good as others but will last longer than competing products. For me this equals less maintenance.

i run rowaphos... bought it in bulk so i've been using it for a while... if i were to switch, i'd probably go with the phosar hc stuff for ease of use/handling

the use of GFO is just another export tool that allows me to feed more

i have a hanna colorimeter... it can give you a more accurate reading than most other tests, but you have to remember... it only picks up free po4. So if algae, corals, etc, etc are sequestering P/po4 as fast as it is introduced to the system, you will never get a true representation out of a free po4 test kit/meter.

if you've not used GFO before.. just go slow with it... too much too soon can strip your tank and bleach your corals

for reference.. i run 10-12 heaping tablespoons (450g TSV)swapping it out monthly (usually... sometimes longer...sometimes shorter (pending laziness ))

Use too much GFO and you can shock the system with a sudden drop in PO4. Should be gradual, like any changes.

"What else might iron oxide hydroxide do? Biological effects

Quite a large proportion of aquarists using GFO in reef aquaria have reported undesirable effects on corals. These reported effects include tissue recession and bleaching. Many advanced aquarists have associated these effects with the first addition, or with a later change, of the GFO. While many or all of these reports may be coincidence, there are enough reports that aquarists should be wary. Listed below are a number of possibilities that may be the cause......

I'm not sure if I'm imagining this because I've read it so many places but the water looks much clearer. No bad affects on the corals as of yet but I started with a small amount. I didn't measure it but it's about 2" of the media in the reactor.
