I currently have about 20 2-3'' G. smithii being used in some research. Each is housed in a half gallon plastic tub with a 4 inch piece of pvc for a container and the water is about 4 inches deep. There is no circulation and the temperature is around 75 degrees (room temperature in my lab). The water is changed three times a week three hours after feeding. (I use live adult brine shrimp to cut down on decomposition.

This may sound spartan, but the animals have been held this way for two months and we have yet to lose one. They are tough animals and as long as you don't let the water go "off' from uneaten food, they do fine.
