I've ran several external with no problems, the sad part was they transfered just as much heat external as they do submerged

Its amazing how many posts I've seen where people claim external will transfer less heat. The fact is the pump is cooled by the water pumped through it. External, or internal, that doesn't change.

sjm817,
This isn't always the case.
Some external pumps, such as Iwaki's have cooling fans on them that blow heat away from the pump so less heat is transferred to the water.
The same amount of heat is created it is just transferred to the surrounding air.

Obviously. That is exactly the point.
There is a huge difference between an air cooled external and a water cooled submersible. My post was referring to the latter.

a Mag pump will run a few degree cooler external then they do submerged but their design isn't made for external use when thinking of heat exchange.
