MH to much for LPS?

I currently have all LPS under 452 watts of power compacts in a 75 gal. I am thinking about purchasing (2) 250 watt metal halides so I can keep some clams and SPS. Some of my LPS corals are about 3/4 of the way up in the tank, and some are in the sandbed. If I get MH, will this be to much for a hammer, frogspawn, torch, or any LPS really to be in the middle to top of the tank?

Thanks
Jeff

My LPS came from Compacts and I put them under 250 DEs 14K and they like indirect lighting near the bottom, so i have them at the left and right sides of the tank near the glass

dragon_slayer: How did you mount those lights over your tank? The lights I am thinking of buying just have reflectors, sockets, and the ballast included. There is no external box to hand the light with. I don't know how to go about mounting the lights with just the reflectors to work with (without it looking to bad) Can I just drill the reflectors into a canopy? It looks like you just have reflectors also. Anybody can chime in on this one.

Thanks
Jeff

I just put my first MH over my tank that had PC's. I guess I should have acclimated them slower than whta I did...cause I lost a colony of candy cane's and my leather coral. I'm not saying that they are bad. But I guess I'm the exception here...so caution MAY be in order...good luck.

How did you mount those lights over your tank?

as you can see in the above pic there are vertical pieces of 3/4" plywood between the reflectors, the reflector is screwed to these. wires are drilled out the back of the canopy and ballasts are screwed directly to the back of the canopy, the 12" wire from the socket goes directly to the ballast i don't use an extension.

Dave

cant say about the CC but the leather most likely demised due to lack of flow. upgrading to MH always causes them to shed about twice a week and if they do not have proper flow over them at this time they'll remain closed unable to shed the outer layer and suffocate.

the below pics from my gallery were posted a few yrs back showing growth rates and are of a CC i have that was in the first pic residing in a 29g system with one 10kk 55w PC and three actinic, the second pic is a year later after it was moved under 400w 20KK MHs.

Make sure to acclimate them to the new light or you will fry them!
