Pretty sure this is acan maxima
Got a good feeling that this is a maxima. The polyps are HUGE and very puffy. Much larger than any acan i have. It dwarfs the randy o lords i have as well by twice. The polyps are the same or a little bit larger than the old 50 cent piece.
Whatch guys and gals think? I def dont think its a lord, That is the only other thing i can see it being. TIA

Looks to be a very large polyp lord. Very nice either way.

I don't think that is a Maxima. Check out Mike's Maximas. I have a lord that gets nearly the size of a silver dollar.
I think you have a nice lord thats just really big. But again, I'm no expert. Post more pics of your new acan. Looks awesome. http://thecaptivereef.samsbiz.com/pa...nthastrea.html |

I have some Acan Lords that get 2" across... About 50 polyps when Ecoralz was selling that 1.5 " Japanese Acan Maxima for like $699 I was gonna sell all 50 of these for the blowout price of just $499 each polyp... The colony cost me 2 arms and 2 legs after all........ Mostly Maximas are kinda like Unicorns (I know, I know some people do have them.... But those are Pure Virgins)

So the maxima's look more like lobo's? I have yet to see a good pic of one close up.
Guess this is just a giant acan lord, or a micro maxima. LOL Heres a pic of them to the right in th epic, You can see the randy o's in the center towards the front.

Do you guys remember the acan Atlantis and Frag Farmer had? Those were apparently Maximas.
Doc - one time Ezcorals had the orange ones that he also said were Maximas, he was selling the colony for 1K. Those are the same ones that Atlantis and Frag Farmer had. Its funny though, everytime someone says they have a Maxima, everyone argues they its not. |

I saw (in person) the maxima that Atlantis had (maybe still has), it looked very similar to what Mike has, to me neither of them looks very close to this: http://whelk.aims.gov.au/coralsearch...0pages/911.htm
I personally don't think that they're acans, there are lots of mussa's out there. I do think they're nice though and tried to buy the Atlantis one when it first arrived, no such luck though (at the time they were calling it 'unknown lps').

When I got mine it was a baby about the size of a nickel. Now its a little smaller then a silver dollar. But it hasn't taken an oval shape like adults. Its still round. Whatever type of acan it is, I love it. |

I have yet to see a coral in someone's tank that warrants the name Acanthastrea maxima.
The two morphs Mike has look like two different Genus. While I'll admit there are some unusual large polyp Mussides floating around, none look even close. As for your piece Creetin, it's very nice, and close to the color Veron describes a maxima would be. "Colour: Green, grey or brown"

The ones Atlantis had came from a local wholesaler in the Bay Area. A couple was floating around the local stores and could be had for $50 dollars for 3 polyps or so. Those for sure are not Maximas. Atlantis was one of the first to capitalize on that market. Aquarium Concept in Hayward had a small colony of 10 plus polyps back in the hay days.
I had a few in my tank and I know they are not lobos, lords, micros, favia, etc.... Why you ask? Because when you place them next to each other, the unknown maxima would send out destroyer tentacles to kill all the other mention corals. |

Hey Lam,
Can you describe the destroyer tentacles?

I noticed this just now looking at the polyps at night with this acan. The polyps are not connected by any flesh, It looks to be seperate polyps like in vernons pic there. Plus the polyps are irregular compared to the normal acan polyp. They are not the typical of lord polyps. This looks to me what a scoly and a lord hybrid would look like.

Plus that orange one on captives looks like Acanthastrea ishigakiensis not a maxima. IMO
OK vernons says max coralite size of 50mm. That puts it right around the 2 inch mark.

No problem. When the destroyer tentacles are out, they are web like (no spiderman joke) and can be as long as 3 inches. The tentacles look nothing like what the lords or echinata puts out. Hope that helps. Lam |
