Anyone know anything about Fish Lukemia?

Reefneck got this and is in Shand's room #726. He is doing ok but his lymph nodes are all swollen. They think it is fish lukemia/tuberculosis probably caused from a Brooklynella infested tank? If anyone has heard of this give him a call. They dont know much info on this so that is why they are keeping him there. He is feeling ok so give him a call and cheer him up

You might want to check with Jack @Bio Reef. I think a few years back he got infected with a marine bacteria.

There is a reefkeeping online article about the TB it is nasty. A guy almost lost his finger. It did not say anything about lymph nodes though. That makes me think it could be something worse.

I just read that article. That is soem bad stuff. The guy has a deformed finger now and the bacteria destroyed the tisue and ligaments in his finger.

Yea, but nothing about lymph nodes. That is usually a worse deal i.e. lymphoma type cancer. Hope everything is alright.

no kidding. Sounds serious Because the Lymph nodes carry through the body rather fast.

Lymph nodes react to infection, among other things, and may become swollen: this is what they do when doing their job.

sk8r is on the right track. I personally know someone, very close to me, who has Lymphoma Cancer. The Lymphatic System is part of a secondary circulatory systems that protects the body from being infected. Lymph nodes are all over your body, they don't travel.

I'm still here. Got my laptop in here now. Room is 726 & it's Bed #2. Anyone that asks for 726 bed #2 will get me. I do walk downstairs occasionally to satisfy a nasty habit.

The Lab still has no answers. They do think it's Fish TB at the moment but nobody is sure of anything. They are going to take pictures of me for a medical journal. They want me to stay till they figure out what exactly it is. They have found nothing cancerous so far and feel that if it were, They would know it by now.

No telling how long I will be here but it was wonderful to log on and see so many responses to this so fast. Thanks for the well wishes.

ReefNeckWidow and the girls just left. A little rough on her right now with the girls but everything seems to be going ok.

Will try to keep you all informed.

I found one article on marine TB:

Human infection is clearly associated with mycobacterial infection in fish, most notably _Mycobacterium marinum_. _M. marinum_ causes an infection often called "swimming pool" or "fish tank granuloma."

These names are derived from the epidemiologic niche of the organism, occurring 2 to 3 weeks after contact with contaminated water. The lesions classically begin as small violacious papules on the upper extremities that progress to shallow, crusty ulcerations and scar formation. Although usually singular, multiple ascending lesions resembling sporotrichosis may be seen. Not necessarily associated with cutaneous disease, deeper soft tissue infection with _M. marinum_ has been reported in bursae or joints as well.

Most patients are clinically healthy with a previous local hand
injury that becomes infected while cleaning a fish tank, or patients may sustain scratches or puncture wounds from saltwater fish, shrimp, or fins contaminated with _M. marinum_. Swimming pools seem to be a risk only when nonchlorinated. Diagnosis is made from culture and histologic examination of biopsy material, along with a compatible history of exposure.

Photographs of cutaneous infections due to _M. marinum_ in humans can be seen at
http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/20...ndStevePro.jpg or

http://www.freshwater-aquarium-fish...._granuloma.jpg .

One other zoonosis I found from fish was meliodosis, which has symptoms of enlarged lymph nodes. It is caused by a bacillus bacteria Burkholderia pseudomallei.

I hope he is getting better.

Crazy stuff...I actually contracted this rare form of TB on return from a scuba trip, diving with an open wound on my side. It was some really terrible stuff, till I finally found the right doctor who prescribed some really potent Antibiotics....things cleared up soon thereafter.
Take it easy dude....Get well...

Thank you everyone. Slept like a bear last night due to the sleeping pill the Dr. gave me. Woke up in pain this morning but the nurse got me something for that right away. Shands is really a good Hospital. I have yet to run into anyone unpleasent here.

Anyway, I am sure nothing has changed overnight so I don't have anything new to add yet. I'll try to keep you all informed. Having a Capuchino and looking out my room's windows at the moment.

I hope everyone has a good day and thanks again for all the support.
