Painting stand question (Spray or roll)

Just wondering if anyone has any experience painting a stand. I'm looking to go black. I have a old wooden stand and so far I've sanded it down, its very smooth. My question is should I spray paint it or roll? Any suggestions? I would like to avoid it chipping, which tends to make me think rolling it would hold up better.

Anyone have any experience with spray painting? How as it held up?

This is gonna be for my 210 display tank so I want the best for it.

Thanks for your help.

What should I use to waterproof the spray? I'm assuming your suggesting spray painting as opposed to using a spray gun.

noway don't spray it, thats foolish!!!!!! for a wood stand you will want to roll it for a nice smooth finish. i suggest using a oil based paint, its a nice way to seal the wood from water. and i also would do a couple coats of at least a semi gloss. HTH

Rolling:
Pros: It will give you a much thicker coat and more chip resistantance. It will also seal the small cracks and holes better because of it thicker consistency. You will also be able to work out runs easier (with a brush.) It will be more water resistant. No paint is water proof on wood.
Cons: It will take much longer to dry and you may see brush /roller strokes.

Spray:
Pros:Much faster application and drying and no roller marks.

Cons: Less ability to seal and a better chance of runs.

If, you decide to spray, I would use the best grade of Krylon brand enamel and use a primer. You are going to have to get the wood sealed before you put the top coats (color) or you wouldn't be happy with the results!

If, you decide to roll. Try to get a good self priming Polyurethane floor enamel.

Spraying doesn't give you a thick coat. You will have to spray multiple coats waiting the appropriate time in between. If you roll you can get on a thick coat and be done with it. I painted the inside of my stand black and rolled / brushed and it turned out nice. You can't even see the roller marks. It took two coats to get it solid black.

good info, thanks I was about to spray it black, but am going to look at the other options stated. The stand has been primed and sanded. Just trying to see what everyone else has done with their stans/canopies and the results. So I guess Ima ditch the spray option and look into some oil based paint.

I mean this is for my 210 DT and I dont settle for nothing but the best.

So an oil based paint is the way to go? I've already sprayed it with a sandable primer and sanded it down. Feels really smooth. I guess it would still be ok to use an oil based paint on top of top right?

Thanks for the help, saved me from making a big mistake I guess.

Only thing I was tryign to avoid was that gloss look. Not a big fan. Would rather soemthing flat. Do they have oil based paints that dont have a glossy look to them.

As you can tell, I know nothing about painting. LOL

Most all oils are gloss. If you shop around you may find a semi-gloss.

satin does not shine, and is much more flat than semi gloss if thats the look you are after.

use the paint i used on my stand in my build. it is bb-q black. it is a high temp oil base paint used for grills and fire places and it comes in 1/2 pts and qts. the name brand is rust o leum if i do remember. i know the high temp is not needed for a fish tank but i was looking fo a paint that would stick to auto primer. u can use a spray gun or you can use a foam brush. lays nice and flat and will stick to primer. i know! i used a automotive filler primer called slick sand and the paint stuck nice! i got the paint at manards. check it out in the build by clicking the red house.
