LB aquarium

I was at the Monterey Bay Aquarium 2 day before Xmas and the Great White Shark was there. Hes only a baby. They said hes only 10 months old and about 3.5-4ft long. They also said he'll only be in there for another month or two.

I took this pic of an angelfish with flash because I could not catch it ( swimming too fast)

what kind is it , think it was the most beautiful fish out of the whole aquarium they only have two of them. ( not in same display)

Clarion Angel, fantastic fish... I saw quite a few of them in Mexico one trip. You also see Passer angels quite a bit there...

Uncommon in the hobby, Mexican gov't occasionally gives (gave) permits to collect.

I figured they where uncommon or rare because I have never seen this fish before ( an the fact that I only seen two at the aquarium lol), they are so PRETTY. Thanks for the info

This is probably the same angle, when I took the picture, it was in the SPS frag tank above the large tank.

When they're young <5"... they're bright red/orange with neon blue stripes like a Passer angel. A TRULY stunning fish. Last time I saw them around town the wholesalers were asking $400.

Yeah thats the same angel OMG look at it the colors are amazing
the two I saw where not in the sps tank they moved one to a tank with these goby type fish no coral in the tank at all lol must have been nippying at the sps.

The other one was I believe in the huge tank with sharks or the anthias tank can't remember.

Are the tours worth it?
i cant wait should be fun. i will be like a tourist at disneyland.(camera in hand and going wild)

Depends, if you like looking at equipment, and the tops of tanks............... they YES! I've been on the behind the scene tours with MASLAC and countless late night member nights and still enjoy it. You have to ask to see the SPS tank as it's in a separate room.

The clarions are sweet! I think they were in with the garden eels when I was there in one of the concave wraparound tanks.

Sweet, didn't know MBAQ had another great white. Road trip time. The last time I went was a couple years ago. Clarion is one nice fish.

Except it says it's only about 4 feet. Looks like I've lost my sense of distance/size. No wonder I don't fly R/C anymore...

I'm sorry to hear many of you didn't like the Long Beach Aquarium.
Shark Lagoon has a cryptocaryon problem right now, that is why all the fish are M.I.A. They should be back in a month or two.

Last year we were supposed to go there for a behind the scenes as one of my kids teachers is a docent there; that never materialized so I'll be hitting them up on my own. Fortunately, Konadog was kind enough to forward me some contact info so I won't be walking in blind. We may make it our March "event"; we'll see. I suspect it will be a fairly large crowd, and that might make it difficult. Wanting the quarterly events to be family friendly means kids, and having a meaningful/productive behind the scenes while making sure little Johnny isn't feeding MNM's to the fishies can make it rough...

I can also get your ticket at a 20% discount because I'm a member, so if you do go again, we can get a bit of a break that way.

Bubba Gumps is always good; nice sized beers and decent food (mostly seafood, though: the non-seafood selection is kinda sucky). There's a PF Changs, I think, and a Chili's, Outback and (as was said earlier) Famous Daves (I was disappointed in it, frankly, but maybe it was just a bad day).

And yes, nice thread. It's a decent aquarium; I think we're lucky to have it. Too bad Sea World's having so many issues; that's a true bummer.

Also, the MBAQ has a good portion of the building under construction for a reef display; forgot what the finish date was, but that should be a nice exhibit, as well. I can spend 2 days there and not really get bored. My family, OTOH (on the other hand), is another story...

That's actually a good idea. To keep a particular specimen's "blood line" going, get some to qualified reefers with an understanding that the original is available to the aquarium (or OTHER aquariums!) if needed. There are programs like that with seeds; forgot what the term is for it. But there are places with seeds from all over the world that they keep and catalog, in an attempt to preserve them.
