Where to get macroalgae and marine vascular plants

Could this be made a sticky thread? It's a frequently asked question, and rather than repost the vendors over, and over again in thread after thread, why not just have it up front.

billsreef.com - wide variety of macroalgae's, and vascular grasses.
harvested from the New England coastline and Bill's growout tanks
ipsf.com - wide variety of macroalgaes from the Pacific, raised in their facility.
inlandaquatics.com - a source for chaeto and other macroalgaes, grown in their own tanks.

pls feel free to add other vendors I have missed, these are just the three I deal with on a regular basis.

I will be going on vacation to the beaches; Daytona and Cocco, where they're located (Cocco beach) And I will be picking up some more macro from them.

I will let you know how things go.

any opinions about collecting your own grass (or macro)? I live in FL as well and was thinking of going a few places and diving for my own. That's what they do at FL pets, so I see no reason why not.

This isn't the right place for this question; but I'll answer it.

I believe you might have to have a permit to do that. Not sure, it was in a thread later back, and someone was visiting the Key's and wanted to take stuff home. I would be very careful if you do decide to "hunt" for macro's in the open waters of FL..

I'm going to Mexico Beach later on next week, and I'm going to look for a few things as well, but not diving, snorkeling, because I'm only 16.

Hope this helps,

-Nick

There are certain things you cannot collect. It's best to visit the Florida Fish and Game and find out what's off limits.

I know that in the Mississippi delta, it's illegal to collect sargassum sp macro algae. It's been over harvested there and it's removal is killing off the spawning grounds for a lot of sports fish, like billfish.

How about someone posting some good sources for mangroves. The only place I could find is Dr. F&S and I don't want to order from them.

I found this page while searching macroalgae:

http://www.macro-algae.com/

I haven't done business with them, so caveat emptor.

I've had good results with ipsf.com, bill's reef, Gulf Coast Ecosystems, and FloridaPets.com. After my gracilaria purchases from different vendors I realize there are many different types of Graciliaria.

IPSF.com

Bill's Reef

Gulf Coast Ecosystems

FloridaPets.com

Gulf Coast Ecosystems

I just got a Caulerpa Sampler Pack and Two Red Mangroves for my refugium from Gulf Coast Ecosystems. The shipping was a little slow but everything was alive and well when it arrived and is still doing fine. The sampler pack was suppose to have 3 types of algae but I actually got 4 different types.
Over all, very good pricing and very good specimens provided. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking to purchase some cheap , hardy marine plants and macroalgae.

Thanks, D.J.

[welcome] Master_pp

I'm kind of bummed because I really wanted to order some of the "bananna bunch" caulerpa or whatever it was called. Now it's no longer listed

Come get them your self.
I sponser a course like event 12th-14th of July in Florida(Key Largo).

It's done cheap, we stay at a Marine lab so the room and board is cheap, we get about 50 species each year.

I limit the event to 15 folks.
Flights are cheap or the drive might not be that far.

It's all macro's and marine plants.
We collect and explore during the day, ID at night.
We go to the reef, the mangrove forest(as cool as any reef) roots, island hop and snorkel around various locations after new species.

I've done this for ther last 3 years.

Regards,
Tom Barr
