Treating With Vitamin C

Some of you may know that about 2 months ago I got sick & tired of my zoas closing up & disapppearing. Folks kept telling me to dip but most of my colonies are growing directly on large rocks & my main tank is a wall of rock. I racked my brain trying to find something I could safely dose my entire tank with & I found it!

I know lots of folks were asking for before & after pics & I actually did find an old pic of my Tubb's Blues, the thought of losing them was the last straw--the whole purpose of my looking for a cure to this problem. I refused to lose these beauties!

Before:

After (today, 2 months later):

See all the new babies on the bottom? Everything's growing like that now!

That is amazing. How is your SPS reacting? What happens when you stop dosing?

I have been following your big post and as you know tried out your plan. I dose 2000 mg on the 220 and 1000 mg on the 40 gallon tank daily. Does this sound right?
BTW, I am not sure if its a coincidence but I am getting great polyp extension on my zoas and pallys and my ricodia frags are growing and healing quickly since starting vitamin C.

Oh BTW, Walgreens has a buy 1 get one on Nature Made Vitamins right now. Yesterday I bought a bottle of (100) 1000mg tablets for $9.95 and got another bottle for free.

Jeff, If I'm dosing 2000mg 2x/day on my 90g, I think you need to double that on your 220. Raise it in 500mg increments though.

WOW! Thats a lot of vitamin C. I am kind of nervous about what happens if I ever stop dosing the vitamin.

Some folks are concerned about what will happen if they stop dosing the C. When I stop taking it, it's not like I get sick the next day. Less of a chance of my getting sick if exposed though, if I am taking it. I am a huge believer of homeopathic remedies & take a lot of suppliments daily. Vitamin C actually got me thru a bout of chemo at one time, boosting my imune system to the point where I was able to quit early & still recover (I was taking 20,000mg daily).

What I didn't expect was for it to boost all my healthier corals so much! Geoxman had a perfectly healthy tank when he started dosing & he's a firm believer of using it for healthy corals too now. Some folks are even seeing differences in their healthy fish. So far, I have seen absolutely no negative results from doing this.

I know a gal was concerned, that when I stopped dosing, my Tubb's blues started receding again & maybe they were "dependent' on the C. I say, that there is obviously something awry with my tank or strain of zoas that are causing them to succumb to this malady so frequently & if I have to always dose my tank, then so be it. What I (& she) was wondering, if I sell these zoas, will the buyer have to dose too? I wonder...

Since vitamin C is ascorbic acid.

I wonder what that does to the PH in the tank?

EDIT: I found the answer here. http://www.athiel.com/lib2/pguide/vitami1.html

All these Qs have been answered in the big thread on this, in the zoa forum. I have no changes at all, to my pH, with the amount I'm dosing

To be honest with you, that thread has gotten so big, I would need to take a day off of work to read all the way through it. Most of the larger threads have alot of information that gets missed because people aren't going to read 13 pages of posts.

I get all my personal supplements from www.vitacost.com save big money.

Sorry, not trying to derail/hijack the thread. Just trying to help a brother/sister out.

Can we try to keep this subject on track, so there isn't another 10 pages for folks to read? Thanks!

I still think you should at least scan that other thread, so you can see the questions/answers & results folks are having.

I visited Vitamin Shoppe today and picked up some Vitamin C capsules. I chose capsules because they are easy to disolve. I got generic Vitamin C 500 MG. I opened two capsules and poured it in my sump. However, I found the power to be floating rather than solving.

Pufferpink, is this the right thing to do?

I have also added few cupsules to my homemade garlic blend.

i would dissolve it first in some RO water and add a rounded teaspoon of baking soda to buffer it. vitamin C is an acid after all and this way it wont mess with your alk and pH. it will fizz a lot at first but thats because CO2 is being released and the H2O molecule formed caries the extra H+ cation, the reason why it should not lower the pH any longer. wait till the fizzing slows as to not add access carbon dioxide to the tank, this seems to be more important if your running a calcium reactor. pH was a little weird in my tank till i started to use baking soda together with the vitamin C.

C6H8O6 + NaHCO3 -> C6NaH7O6 + CO2 + H2O
acorbic acid + baking soda = sodium ascorbate + carbon dioxide + water.
im no chemist, correct me if im wrong.
