6th tang bites the dust(or ICH) :(

I have had a reef tank for 2 years. I have had a royal gramma, 2 perc clowns and a fairy wrasse for just about the same amount of time. I have been trying to add a tang since and have finally given up. I have gone through:
1 blue tang
1 yellow tang
1 convict tang
2 naso tangs
1 whitecheek tang
none have lasted longer than 2 months. The most recent (whitecheek) lasted about 3 weeks. I'm giving up on tangs. Can anyone recommend a hardy yet colorful fish with some personality?

If you can get them to eat at the store then you have a chance at home, but make sure they eat before bringing them home, I have never lost a tang I feed mine brine when they first arrive in my tank, I dont feed until the next day, let them get familiar to the surrounding, then next day i mix up brine and Ocean Nutrition (green flakes) they usually take a bite and never have a problem after that. I have had a blue tang get Ich many times at the start but as long as i feed heavily they pass the ich, i have had all my tangs ich free for over a year +

I picked up my sohal last March and has been 100% since the day i brought him home

that must be nice...no such luck for me; however, i have had great luck with the others and the coral that's in my tank. For some reason, i just can't keep a tang alive.

I bet if you had a larger tank things would end up better for you a 55 is way to small for all the tangs but maybe a yellow for while but still to small...

ditto , 55 is pretty small for a tang, but maybe a kole could get by for a while. Seems to me that you may have a lot of stress in the tank, what are your other tankmates?

not to come off to negative but if you would have done your research you would have known that it was a BAD idea in the first place. no tang belongs in that sized tank let alone killing that many trying. stick with small fish

i agree that it wasn't the best idea, but all the tangs were less than 2 inches big. I've been going to the same LFS and have seen over a dozen yellow tangs in the same tank for months. How do pet stores do it? THey keep way too many fish in small tanks. I went to one store ( nobody I have ever seen has as much healty coral like this store) and he had over 20 3/4" blue tangs in a 40 gallon. I know they are always selling them but they can't possibly replace them that quickly. My parameters are perfect and I only had them with 2 tiny perc clowns, a 2" fairy wrasse and a 2" royal gramma. AND, to add insult to injury, my brother has had a sailfin tang in a 39 for 2 years and the fish is one of the healthiest I have ever seen. I know of another pet store that has had the same 8+" lion in a 10 gallon. It's crazy!

A 55 is way too small. Just because some people are able to do it doesn't make it right. Alot of petstores may have them in smaller tanks, but usually they are hooked up to a huge system making the water quality alot better than ur home tank will be. Plus their fish are usually only in their tanks for under a week.

Most pet stores order new fish every week or two.

Plus, many stores have their smaller tanks connected to much larger sump and central filtration systems, so dillution of pollution is taken care of. And, the fish are not there long-term, so stunting from confined quarters is not an issue.
