Need help with 400w ballast

We bought this ballst new never used from a fellow member. I'm guessing it was fine it wasnt rattling my bf said when he shipped it out. I got it today, and hooked it up. it fired up the bulb. i left came back and the bulb was off. I picked it up and was looking it over and it rattled. I than opened it b/c we dont have an origional reciept and i wasnt worried about voiding the warranty and tihs is what i found. I have a few questions.

Is this repairable?
How do you do it if it is?
and how do i get rid of this burnt rubber in here?

I emailed coralvue to see if they did repairs and if this was even fixable. here are some pictures. we'll see what they say

we purchased insurance through USPS which im sure this is how it was broke. It's going to be a big pain in the a** to claim it and get it done though

That didnt break from shipping damage. It "broke" in use when something overheated either from a surge or just something else going bad ... a short, something failing and allowing too much power to get to some of the components, a thermistor that failed and allowed the unit to overheat ... something, but not shipping damage.

The original owner may or may not have known of the issue. It could have been acting up like shutting down intermittently from overheating or otherwise so he dumped it before it failed. Or, it just may be one of those bad luck things where it just happened to fail for you.

I guess you could see if the seller is interested in refunding your money. Otherwise, Coralvue should be able to repair it. Most places have a flat fee for stuff like that.

well it worked when i took it out of the box. I think that donut came lose while shipping b/c this was brand new and never used. the reason i know this is b/c it had never been wired up and had the origional wires on it not stripped. I hooked it up it worked fine came back it was off. I'm guessing this thing was lose and cause a short circuit which than caused the burning.

It would very difficult for that to be damaged in shipping, unless it was faulty (cold solder) from the factory, without the case showing damage. The toroid is soldered to the board. For it to be jarred loose it would have to have been a pretty good blow that I would think would cause some damage to the case. Barring the damage to the case, it would be unlikely for a blow that bad to only jar loose that one part. But hey, if you can get the postal service to pay for it, more power to you.

If it's new, they must have put a faulty part somewhere in the circuit that cause that damage, or a major surge. Either that or very possibly a cold solder joint from the factory which wouldnt be very surprising at all considering where (and how) everything is made these days.
