Not my words, That was a quote directly from TMC addressing that picture. I thought it was valid info for crvz.

I heard from someone else that they had a problem with their mimic tang nipping at all kinds of coral (stonies and leathers) as well as clams. Has anyone else noticed this?

Casino- Those mimic pics that Treg posted are exactly the coloration that my mimic is turning into. Mine started out as a solid yellow juvie, no blue or any other color besides yellow. His pic is on page 1 of this thread and this color variant is the Herald's angel mimic.

So is it safe to say that the lemonpeel, halfblack, chocolate and herald's mimics are all pyroferus and will turn out like that one or close to it? Only the Chronixis and Tristis will be diffrent?

These fish seem to be very under rated.
Never heard of any clam nipping till this thread.

Ah, well fellers, I picked up a yellow Herald's mimic last week (not the lemon peel, no blue on it), hopefully it will take to the new surroundings. Here's a shot.

Wow Kahuna Tuna it hasent changed at all since the last pic, has he? I see you also have a blue eyed tang, how do you like him, same as a kole in behavior and temperment?
I get what you mean crvz. Its just so difficult. I just upgraded to a 90 and I really want a tang. I dont want to have too since I know a 90 is too small for 2. Id rather know which one it will turn out in the end. No space for second guessing. The herald seems to be the one to get. Altho that blue eyed tang in Kahuna Tuna's gallery looks awesome and I think his colors are the same when adult and juvi so theres no guessing and hoping with that guy.

As to the question of how an individual mimic juvenile will look once it reaches adulthood I dont think you can count on any two fish looking exactly the same. I have seen a huge variety of different looks one these fish reach adult size.

Well it looks like I will be asking my LFS to order me one of the 2. Heralds or the binotatus, which ever comes in first.

Beautiful fish, waxxiemann! Can you tell us how long you've had it and which variant it was as a juvenile?

I've had him for about 4 months and he looked exactly as he does now. I got him fully grown. I still think he has an inch or maybe 2 to go. Very model citizen so far and stays pretty small IME. He is the only larg(ish) fish in my tank.

Nice fish everyone!
Waxxiemann - Being full grown, does it seem to do well in the 90 gal tank? |

He does great. I feed him mostly Spectrum pellets and he loves them. I have a lot of room in the back as well as the front of the tank and I'd say he seems quite content. He is a little aggressive towards my Lawnmower Blenny though but it's nothing serious.
I do however have a lot of flow in there so that may be a contributing factor to the overall happiness of the fish. I'm hoping to get into a much larger tank in the next year or 2 and I'm sure he'd dig some new digs. Overall, I'd say that this is a good fish for a small(ish) tank but I probably wouldn't be confortable having him in anything smaller than a 90 as the sole large(ish) fish in the tank. I hope this helps. Waxx

Well my LFS got in a few nice blue eyed koles today. I took the smallest one. Top half of his tail is like a bright yellow mustard with deep blue eyes. His 2 lower fins are a nice dull orange. Body I would like to say is a dark blue, depends where he is in the tank but I think it really is a dark brown. Hes only been in the tank for like an hour so he is still acclimating to the tank. I will snap a pic as soon as he seems confertable in the tank or stays still.

Well, resurrecting the dead thread but what the heck.
I have a Chocolate mimic tang that's been in my tank for good on 3-4 yrs. I've had him since he was little, but he was never yellow, he has always looked like the adult color morph since I got him. Very pretty fish, pics don't do justice of the colors on these tangs. I think it may appear that these fish "nip" at corals/clams, but that is not really the case in my experience. My mimic cleans the surface of my clams and some of my corals, but doesn't do any damage to them at all. I'm very hesistant to judge my fish's behavior and have noticed that this type of tang has a tendecy to "clean' various things, especially just after feeding. I actually think this behavior is beneficial to my clams/corals as it rids them of excess detritus, etc. I just bought a little chronixis today and she is doing very well. I am always amazed at what gutsy little fish mimic tangs are, this gal is only about 2.5" and already making territorial claims against my black/white saddleback clowns that are easily double its size. My chocolate mimic in my other tank is also very aggressive and pound for pound the worst of all my tangs when it comes to introducing new fish. The chronixis has very round tail fins and it is hard for me to believe that these will completely change as it gets older and it will start looking like a chocolate mimic (if 50% of reports are to be believed). Only time will tell. But this chronixis is SO pretty, the electric blue on the tail is sweet!! As for availability, my wholesaler gets these guys in at least 10-15 times per year, but the main problem is they are delicate shippers and I think that's why you don't see many at LFS. Morgan |
