cutting down water changes??

when i had my 55g with a hang on filter i use to add maybe a gallon top off every 3-4 days.now with a 75g and a sump filter im adding almost a gallon a day of fresh ro/di water-which is about 7 gallons a week-the amount i would change weekly to every 10 days.why should i be in a rush to change the water when im always adding fresh everyday-am i correct in that thinking??

The water you are adding has nothing in it-no elements of sea water to replace elements used up. In addition, the main purpose of a water chage is to remove pollutants that build up over time. Evaporation rate has nothing to do with water changes.

No, that is incorrect. As the water evaporates it really doesnt pull anything out with it. The reason to do water changes is two fold: 1-to export nutrients that may be building up in the water 2- to add back some trace elements used up by the inhabitants of your tank. Top off water doesnt have anything in it except water. So what you are doing is not even like a water change.

If you doubled the size of your tank, that would be equivalent to doing a 50% water change as it would double the amount trace elements and cut the nurtients in half. But simply replacing top off is not the equivalent of a water change.

The wastes don't evaporate out of the tank and build up over time, top up only replaces lost water.

My 65g loses about 2g a day.

I change about 35 gal for my 210 gal every two weeks. replacement water (top-off) is not substitute for waterchanges as said before.

Top off water is not the same as a water change but if you want to reduce water changes get a big fuge with lots of algae. Takes nutrients out like crazy.
