Unhappy Some one Please Help!!

What is wrong with my Green Button Polyps?!! I know that the photos below are kinda blurry but they are the best I can come up with at the moment. I noticed the other day that not all of the polyps were open. The ones that were not open had what appeared to be a pinched end almost like some one put a rubber band around the stem by the "button" or head. The stem looks fine but towards the head it kinda pinches off and starts turning white. Then kinda looks like its rotting away from the tentacles in. What could be the problem? I noticed what I believe were copepods eating at some of the whitened flesh at the end of the polyps. These creatures look like tiny transparent shrimp. Those are copepods right. I decided to use my seachem reef dip. Alot of these little shrimp jumped off the coral. At this point Im not sure if its them or some kind of bacterial thing. Help Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is this when the lights are out? If so, they should close up. Small transparent shrimp like things are pods, I wouldn't worry, but you may have a few decaying polyps that they are feeding on. If the pods are feeding is most likely too late to recover from. Or they are simply cleaning up waste from the area.

There are alot of polyps that open when the lights are on. I will have a day photo later to show the difference. I do understand that they will close at night but this is something differnet. These was are sick some how. The thing that I cant figure out is I have many other reef creatures in this tank that are seemingy healthy and are much more "difficult" to care for than button polyps.

Do you have peppermint shrimp or maybe a crab you don’t know about living in your rock?
Something picking on them?

Not that I know of. Ive tried looking with a red light at night but so far I havent seen anything. The only shrimp in the tank is a cleaner shrimp which seems to stay away from the polyps.

Look around the tops, is there small white fuzzy things that could be alive? They may move if you watch them long enough.

You mean the tops of the polyps, the part that is decaying right?
What exactly should I look for? Nudibranch? How small? What kind of movement? Thank you so much for your help!!

It depends some can be very small the size of a pin head. They will climb up the sides to feed. They are like fuzzy white snails with no shell. Mostly I see them on one type of polyp but they may feed on others. There are also more then one spices and this is just a shot in the dark you may not even have Nudibranch.

Here are a couple of photos with the lights on. What ever this is its spreading throughout the colony. The tentacles are curling back and shriveling. Chemical Warfare? The only things that are even close to this colony are a kenya tree a caulerpa branch and a colony of xenia and all of these are at least 5-6 inches apart.

Update: I just siphoned out alot of what looked like little little slugs or snails without a shell. They have a white body and are really thin. Super thin!!! They have little antenna kind of like a copepod but these things slither like a slug. The only thing is that all that I siphoned were on the back wall. I have not seen a single one actually on the polyps.

Bob

It is probably a transient thing, sometimes the little creatures of the night in my tank like to bug my zoos / palys. If this continues and you see obvious deterioration I suggest doing a fresh water dip with iodine (if you have it).

Use some RODI water, a few drops of iodine and dip the affected coral for 5 mintues at first (and longer if you want). Then you can see what is bugigng them, most little pests will die very quickly and then it is easy to figure out what they were. Good luck.

I don’t think what you siphoned out were what I was referring to. Is this a new colony? If it is, it is possible that it is still adjusting to your tank’s conditions. Some of the polyps may die but ones that don’t will re-colonize the rock. The things you say you have may be a predator that you can find on clove polyps and other polyps and may be eating your button polyps.

I don’t know where to find a picture of the slugs I am talking about that you find on some polyps. I haven’t seen one in years in my tank but from what I remember it is kinda like what you are describing. I never seen them off a coral just on the glass though, they usually stick around the coral they are eating.

My lights have been turned off early today. I happend across my tank as my cleaner shrimp was pulling at a colony of xenia showing similar problems!!! Is it possible that it would eat a living coral?!! Or is this simply the act of him eating tissue that is already dead?

To add to the problem I just noticed that some stalks my xenia appear to turning white and start to kind of shrivel and then appear to be releasing there zooxanthally. There is a gunk stringing from the heads of the distressed polyps. This gunk has a green flourescent glow under my actinics, thats why I think its zooxanthalle. Is that wrong? Has anyone ever seen this? Oh and on last question. Does anyone know the exact species of xenia shown here?

The discharge has more of a green flourecsent glow. Imagine a green flourescent light thats been on for a while then turned off. You know how it will have a glow for a few minutes, thats exactly what this stuff looks like.

Is there actually something that will eat on both of my button polyps and my xenia? Like I stated in a earlier post my scarlet cleaner shrimp was picking at one of the hurt xenia stalks earlier. Is he the culprit?

Nope. Just my two percs the scarlet cleaner and a clean up crew with various sand dwellers. With this type of xenia can I just cut off what appears to be the infected area? I ask just in case it is some type of bacterial infection is present. I was wondering about propagating the xenia anyways. Is it safe to simply cut at the tissue of this xenia?

Xenia is funny it can grow out of control and then one day all die. I have had a crash and thought it was all gone and it grew all over the tank months later.
