i wouldn't trust one single heater. if you are shooting for 300watts of total heating, i highly reccomend getting three 100watt heaters instead of a single 300 watt heater.

this way you have redundancy in case a heater malfunctions and you will be safe because a single small heater cannot heat up your tank too much i it sticks "on".

i have three 100 watt heaters on my tank, one set at 78, one set at 77 and the last set at 76.
