# of posts to a thread....
Hello boys.
Just a quickie (question) here.... I noticed a trend while I was hanging in the newbie forum (cuz I'm such a noob you know ) I'll see something with 1 or 2 posts or 0 posts and when I click on it it actually shows 3 - 5 posts on the thread. At first I thought maybe that many people were responding that quickly but now I'm thinking that maybe something is up? I refresh often so it's not like I leave the page set and walk away for 45 minutes. I'm bored and I'm sitting here at work etc... (fyi)

Sounds like a web browser or proxy server cache issue.

I'd agree but I'm on IE at work, Firefox at home and netscape on the laptop and it's doing the same thing.

I've seen this happen as well. Just last night as a matter of fact.
Generally, I'd agree it was a caching issue, but the page itself has changed since the last visit (i.e. new posts that you can see). So, you're getting a new page from the server, but when you click on the post, suddenly there are a bunch of replies. I was thinking that maybe the replies all happened in the meantime while I was reading the titles of the other posts.

The "# of posts in a thread" isn't dynamic. In other words, it's not based on a query that returns a number based on a count of the posts in a thread. When you post, there's a second query that runs to increment a counter in the thread table itself. It's entirely possible (and quite likely, actually) that at certain times, that second query runs after the fact, well after the actual post has gone through. The reason is because the query is tagged as "LOW PRIORITY" within the database engine. It only goes through when there are no more important queries to process.
At least, that's what my take on it is.
