Cleaning my protein skimmer

Hi just wanting to know if I should clean inside the main body of my skimmer it has been running for 6 months now and have just cleaned the pump and noticed a small build up of what looks like algae on the inside of the skimmer not sure if I should give it a good clean or let it go please any advise would be great.My skimmer is a REEF OCTOPUS HURRICANE 1500 if this is any help to anyone thanks GRaham

Yes, you should clean the whole skimmer to keep it operating at its full potential. I clean mine every few months.

I like to run it in the sink with vinegar and water.

I agree with Pmolan, I do 1 part vinegar and three parts water and let it run without an air supply for about 8 hrs. Then I take a large foxtail brush with soft bristles, one you would use for washing a glass out. Scrub and rinse and run in freshwater. Replace to the tank and start rippin foam.
