Best Calcium reactor
I hope to get your opinioin regarding the best calcium reactor. I have a 180 gallon mixed reef tank with 30 gallon sump. Currently have a few LPS and xenia, but plan to add more LPS and SPS in the future. I plan on buying a calcium reacotor. I would appreciate your thoughts on the best reactors on the market and any experiences you may have had with them. Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

Deltec calcium reactors are very good, but you will out about $800 if you go with the PF501.

Check out the Scharun JetStream 1 on aquariumobsessed.com. If I had your tank, that's what I'd get.

What's the difference with the Schuran type reactors other than the media? Can you just put their media in a regular reactor and bump down the ph a little?

I guess the real question is, "what defines BEST".
If you spend $1000 on a reactor when the cost of most was say, $500, did you get the best or the "over priced". I think when someone asks, "what is the best" without facts or side by side comparisons, the only answers returned are "opinions". It's like asking, "what's the best protein skimmer"? I can speak about my skimmer, cause that's the only one i've used. One thing remains true, where you place the skimmer will determine its efficiency. |

I have a Korallin and I like it, but I was flamed earlier for mentioning it. I guess someone else doesn't like it. Seems to me that Pro Cal is a little over engineered. All a calcium reactor does is mix CO2 and circulated the acid water through some crushed coral. Seems like we hit the law of diminishing returns. If you spend 2x as much for a reactor, do you get 2 times the benefit?

How come the picture on the marine techincal concepts web page shows a totally different calcium reactor labeled the "procal". Is this beast shown above from another manufacturer?

481824,
I don't think that picture is of the MTC ProCal. I think that is some other calcium reactor (but I don't know which one). I've never seen it before, so maybe it is a custom job. Anyway, I recently ordered my ProCal, and it looks like the picture on the MTC web site. I should also add that it is an incredible piece of equipment and Jeff at MTC really makes nice, high quality stuff. I'm very pleased with it. Brad |

I just installed an Austin Oceans MoCalc300 and couldn't be happier. AO is license-building Barr Aquatics designs and they are so good that people were waiting months and months to get them so Brent licensed them to build for him.
It comes with everything you need (eheim pump that both circulates and feeds, all tubing, check valve, ph probe port), everything except your C02 tank/regulator. They even include a flow meter so dialing them in is a breeze. I had mine dialed by day 2. Co2 is obviously very effecient on mine because my ph hasn't changed at all in the month I have had it going. Its also built like a tank! Not the cheapest or most expensive unit out there but the features and quality are top notch. Here's a link http://www.austinoceans.com/products...alciumreactors
