euroreef es 5-2 or octopus nw150

Hi all. I am wondering which skimmer would be better. I can get a euroreef es 5-2 or get the octopus nw150. Er is a used one and octopus is a new one. I will be putting it on my 55 gal reef. Thanks for your input.

The NW150 no contest there.

The ER ES 5-2 is actually not that great of a skimmer and that body is tiny IMO.

Thanks Dhnguyen. After measuring I don't think the nw150 will fit into my 10 gal sump. Do you think the octopus nw110 will be a good skimmer. I have about $200.00 to spend on a skimmer. What is my best option. I currently have a coralife ss125 and don't like it. Thanks again for eveybody's help.

ER CS 80 Marine Depot has them for less than 180.00 I don't think you can go wrong with that.

Marine depot is selling the RS 80 for $248 with cell cast (really a CS), $178 with extruded (old RS). Buy 2 octopus 100's if you're worried that the 150 wont fit in your 10g.

I had a 5-2, I now have octopus....I'll never buy another ER skimmer again. They perform ok, but the octopus is just as good, or better, than anything I've ever used. When prices go down, (or octo price goes up) Then I will think about the switch.

It's really not even a contest between the octo 150 and the 5-2.

The NW150 is a 6" body 24" tall skimmer. The 5-2 is a 5" body 20" skimmer. The RS-80 is a 5" body, 22" skimmer. The newer ER skimmers perform a lot better than the older models. In this case, the larger NW150 would be my pick, followed by the RS-80, and the 5-2 would be last. You also have to pick the one that will fit in the sump.

Sjm, what makes the newer ER's perform better than the old? I was under the impression they still had the same pump? Don't get my previous post wrong, I don't dislike ER, but for the cost, and my experience with the 5-2, I wouldn't buy another until the price difference evens out, much like the asm.

They have made improvements to the line of pumps. New impeller designs have improved the pumps LPH.

I didn't realize that the sp2 pump had an impeller upgrade, I guess I'm out of the loop lol. Thanks for the info.

it WILL fit in a 10g sump!!!! get the 150, after you mod, better than euroreef rs-80

Thats cool that it fits. A 10G sump isn't much to work with. How will you set up a return pump and micro bubble filtration? There isn't room for a set of baffles.

I would use a bigger sump if possible.

If you can get the 150 go with it. if the 110 go with the ER. the Er line has changed pumps but I dont beleive there is much if any difference in the 3500.
