zoa killing algae ^&$@^%$#!!!
What is it?
Thought it was harmless chaeto. now its killing my zoos practically before my eyes! I am going to try to scrape off as much as I can. Good thing its in my qt the left polyp is completely contaminated. the one on the right is totally surrounded. Last edited by xi-guy; 12/12/2007 at 03:02 AM. |

Kinda hard to tell for sure, but it looks like bryopsis and it can be a real nuisance. Many people have had luck ridding their tanks of it by increasing their magnesium levels. You should be able to find plenty of threads on the issue.
If the search function doesn't work try this link to search the forums. http://www.reefcentral.com/search.php?menu=11 |

Try raising your Magnesium level 1500-1800
This will kill Bryopsis algae as they can't tolerate the high Mag levels. Sea slugs are out of the question, if you have any SPS in the tank as the flow required for SPS to thrive will be the death of the slugs. The weakest powerhead will kill a slug.

Good call guys,
I always thought byposis looked like green xenia, with feathered ends, then I looked up byprosis, and realized there are 20+ different pain in the butt species. this looks a lot like a hard grass variety with no feathered ends. Kent Tech M here I come. |

Here is a reef chemistry calculator to help you know how much magnesium to add based on your currenl levels. Don't be surprised at how much magnesium you actually need to raise it that high. You may be better off doing a larger raise with epsom salt since it will be a one time deal to raise it that high. Also, check out the chemistry forum for Randy's New and Improved DIY Home Made 3 part if you want to dose magnesium regularly. It will surely save you $$$.

Ok, I didn't see that you were using a small QT. Good luck getting rid of it.
