You, Jason, and I can form a dead tank support group at the December NJRC meeting. Well, if bad things come in threes, maybe the run is over. I'm just sorry it had to be you (and me).

Thank you all for your sentiments.

After a restless night, the first thing I did was look at the tank.
The outlook is bleak, but I am going to try.

The next thing was go and get another 100 gallons of water.
I then skimmed out 100 gallons (I did this in the hopes of getting as much nastiness out as I could), then the new 100 gallons went in.

I truly have no idea why.
They record the temp very accurately.
I am going to open one up to see if there is any rust in there...maybe the speaker lead rusted out.

man, you are taking this quite well.

I hate to say it but this could have been avoided by simply glancing at your temp a couple of times a day.
I glance at the temp many times a day.
When we left to the movies it was at 80 degrees.
I did not glance at the temp when we returned though.

Sean,

Don't quit! I've had temps in the mid 90s a couple of times - both when my chiller pump failed. Anything that makes it through the initial spike CAN live - you just have to stay on top of your water chemistry.
I am hoping.
The carnage is pretty widespread though.
There are several Echino's that died as well.
It looks as though the Ric's and Zo's may make it, and all but one fish is accounted for.

I have an Ampmaster 4700, a Mag 12 ( ), 3 Eheims (1 to feed the skimmer, the other two are the recircs), two MJ1200's (1 for Ca Reactor, 1 for PO4 reactor), 3 Tunze streams, 1 Tunze Wavebox, and of course 320 watts of VHO and 1200 watts of halides.

Yeah, plenty of before's and I have taken a few afters.
I am going to begin removing the skeletons and take more pics.
I will post them soon.

Thanks all,
Sean

Major bummer man. Keep up with the waterchanges! I had a crazy sandstorm disaster this summer and my tank is just starting to bounce back -- mainly due to huge waterchanges, sometimes a few a week.

Good luck!

Sean: please consider isolating any skeletons in a growout tank.

There are good chances that a lot of those can come back.. while these animals are delicate, their ability to guard themselves shouldnt be underestimated!

so you had external controller and it busted....man those are anywhere from $150-$1000, thats horrible!
Can't you get controller's comp. to take any resposibility?

Sorry for your disaster! Good Luck!

Sorry to hear about your loss, Sean, but please don't give up.
One thing about machines is that they can fail. Maybe, you can install some kind of temperature sensor that can be triggered to kill the lights when the temperature goes beyond a set point.
I have no high tech sensors other than my constant paranoia about my reef tank temps, and it helps being a homebody.

the controller wasn't at fault. The mag pump run by the controller was. (unless I'm mistaken)

It seems to be a great tragedy at this point, but it does get better. Years ago, my tank, which at the time was already 6 years old, suffered a crash of sorts from a malfunctioning heater-temp climbed to over 100 degrees. I lost several corals, but surprisingly, my sea anemone and fish all survived. I used this opportunity to try a few different corals, especially a few new types of sps. After rearranging the tank, water changes, etc, it was well on its way again after the accident. So, its only a matter of time before you get yours back looking either as good or even better than before. This is the perfect opportunity to look back on past mistakes and things you would have done differently. Without seeing problems, you are unable to find and stop potential ones. So good luck and I want to see pics when you get it going again .

Now that someone mentions it I still have a LTA from a 92 degree spike a few years back when a heater accidently got bumped up way to high.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I was wondering what is the brand/manufacturer of the temp/alarm probes. I may avoid them when shopping for a temp monitoring system.

Sean,

This is horrible, but don't give up.

Keep up the NSW water changes and get things stabilized.

I want you to know I would be happy to get some frags down to you sometime.

You may not be quite ready to process this fully until you commit to going forward. We can give you some ideas on safeguards when you are ready.

At least you do not have a total loss.

I wonder about that flatworm problem you have. Hell of a way to get rid of them.

SeanT my man.... Don't give up, some frags will perish, others will revive....

always love to hear your posts.... I recently had a phosban reactor to overflow the media entirely into my 72 gal display turning the water blood red... Had a green carpet living for along time in good health (had dreamed about crpet living long in ym display without moving) It died when consuming some media...

Everyone goes through ruff times, equpiment fails, panic sets in, money watsed....

EVERYONE HAS HAD PORBLEMS... lets see some pics of newly revived tank... and watch a few months from now... it will look even better... some changes you wanted to make, cna now be made... equip can improve maybe?

I am a brand new reefer and am just learning the amount of work that goes into a tank, temp was at the bottom of the list of worries, now it has been moved up alot higher.

I am sooo sorry for the crash, I hope there will be plenty of surviviors to keep you from giving up. Best of luck to you and your tank!

I am so sorry to hear what happened. Everything went wrong at the same time. Just have a good outlook on it, it may be hard, but it is possible. Even if everything dies, then you get the fun of purchasing and growing new corals, its another way to think about it. Just tryin to help=-)

I hope things turn for the better.

Dude, Sean, I'm sorry, that is one of my worst nightmares.

Could it be that the temp sensor/alarms were on the output of the chiller, and when the chiller was no longer pumping through there since the Mag12 failed, the temp sensors were not reading the temp of the tank?

Sorry to here about the pump failure. I have always liked mag pumps but latley it seams I have been reading about different problems with them. Makes me wonder about a change in my set-up.

Chin up, there are alot of good folks around you that will help you get things back to the norm.

Never give up!
