I will do the Wink test, no worries there. I just put a new bag of carbon in (tossed the old one). It took a week for that rusty/orange stuff to develop. I'll report back when the new bag has some.

Can you tell me what the Wink test would prove or rule out?

Amy, I love you dearly but I'm beginning to worry about you.

Wink is a rust remover. If those are rust stains and not bacteria, they will disappear when you squirt them with hydrofluoric acid (Wink).

Just please be careful with it and don't get any Wink on your skin.

Aww.. have pity/mercy on me Jerel. It's a frighten idea (to me at least) that I might have rust in my tank. I was hoping the Wink was going to prove/disprove some sort of other chemical/biological thingy*.

*technical term

It's a old trick that we use out in the field. Not only is it cheaper and easier to get, it's just as accurate.

Just be careful, hydrofluoric acid is different. It soaks in first - and then does the damage from the inside out. Don't get any on you.

I appreciate the help & advice, you know that I hope. I should have some spots by next week to test (judging by how long it took for the last bag). I will report back here with the results.

I'll have some thick gloves on hand when I use the Wink.

Amy, just so I can follow along, what kind of carbon are you using?

Hey Ken. It's Black Diamond Activated Carbon. I've used that brand for about two years, but in the last 3-4 months have seen this on the baggies.

That's what I use, but have never seen spots. I am interested in what it is now.

[welcome]

Thank you for that link! Sure is something not to be taken lightly.

I am a chef by trade and know one of the worst burns you can get is a hot sugar/caramel burn. I had one on my left hand, where it burned into the muscle. Worst pain I've ever know. I would never be careless with anything that would cause such damage like that acid would.

I don't know how concentrated the HF is in the Wink product but I've seen HF burns and you do not want one. It's nothing like a thermal burn. The free F- ion causes a chemical burn that will not stop until it is nutralized by the calcium in your bones! If you do get burned it often requires injections of calcium gluconate into the effected burn area... without any local anethesia so the Dr can determine when all the F- has been nutralized.

I doubt the Wink product is strong enough to cause these kinds of burns, but I'd wear gloves anyway

Just knowing the HF is an ingredient in the Wink is enough for me to be very very careful.

FWIW, it surprises me that it is that strong and can be sold to the public, but according to this web site, Wink is 7-10% HF

Wink is 7-10% HF

It is extremely difficult to dissolve rust.

Blood stains are also rust stains.

So I guess in some respect I will be able to say that Randy did test my carbon. Even though he is not one of "those types"

Actually, any acid strong enough will dissolve iron oxide. Diluted muriatic acid, for example.

FWIW, the product spelling is WHINK.

The web site is:
http://www.whink.com/rust_stain_remover.htm

Saw it at Wal Mart over the weekend.

Oh MY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HF is one of my favorite hazardous materials. This stuff is SOOOOOOOOOOOO nasty it actually eats through glass. It ranks no. 3 on Mutt's DON"T mutt with list of chemicals.....

Ethelyene oxides are number two. Just look up fuel air explosives or FAE on Google to find things like the Daisy Cutter and Massive Ordance Air Burst (MOAB) to find these little puppies.

Then there's el primo no screwo witho.......inhibited, red fuming nitric acid. This is the oxidizing component in many liquid fueled rocket motors. Nasty, nasty, nasty!!!!!!!!!!
