Yep.

Didn’t someone we know say they are like little cows in a pasture? Give them enough food and you’ll get more and more little cows, until the pasture can’t hold anymore. Then the little cows get pushed out of the pasture where a giant skimmer comes along and picks them up.

How do you bare bottom folks see the fish and corals through the activated sludge formed in an older tank?

Its a good idea to have a refrence sample for alk test kits. 1.1350 grams of baking soda in 1gallon of distilled water=10dkh. Check your alkalinity test kit!

The word means any cast off material. In reefdom it refers to any goop that settles to the bottom of the tank. It can be feces, uneaten food, bacteria floc or organic particulates that end up on the bottom. For instance, if my toupee falls off and settles to the bottom of my tank during a water change it becomes detritus.
From WaterKeeper's unabridged reef dictionary.

Would the toupee be removed better by skimming or GAC?

I had the same situation when I removed my DSB: macro stopped growing. But I've got a shallow sand bed (and my chaeto is growing) because I like how it looks and IMO how it looks is all that matters--it's single purpose is to make me happy, after all.
