ID on This Acro?
I know it's an inexact science at best. I'm thinking acropora nana. I got this small captive colony from a store that was in the process in moving, and this piece looked like hell. It was very brown, and didn't look like it would make it (hence the low price). In two months, the tips have colored up nicely, there's been lots of growth, and the base has gotten much lighter. Probably time to frag soon. Any insight would be appreciated.

Hi,
It looks like what some are calling A. nana and also the Purple Monster. Looks good.

My guess would be a loripes that has in captivity without enough flow around it. Inexact science at best is a good descriptiion. It isn't the animal described as "nana" locally, I haven't looked at the "big Book" (Veron) to if that is actually the "correct" description. I don't think it is a tortuosa "purple monster" FWIW.

It doesn't really match Carden Wallace's description of A. nana but as you say, a best guess is all you can hope for. I agree it isn't A. tortuosa.

I have to disagree with firechild. Not because I think he's wrong, just because I want to disagree with him

I make a living off of disagreement, so I'm all in favor of it!
I appreciate the responses. It's got an awful lot of flow around it now, and it's growth and coloration has really taken off. I've done searches on "A. Nana," and have seen pics that looked like it, and pics that didn't. I've also seen pics of the so-called Larry Jackson "Purple Monster," and they look different as well (I can't wait 'till my "Peach Beast(TM) acro" gets big enough to frag!). I do agree, however, that different conditions can alter the morphology of a colony tremendously. I'm just glad that it appears to be improving since I acquired it. |
