high magnesium issues

after a crash i had this summer bryopsis reared its head in the months to follow.

I ran across that "easy solution to bryopsis" thread and played around. It did work, but I was using homemade and i had to take it over 2000 for it to do so.

anyway.......what exactly does this do?? I did it very slowly and didnt notice anything extremely negative, but calcium became hard to maintain, coral growth slowed down and coralline growth absolutely stopped. Just now when the mag has finally dropped to about 1600 is everything picking up, but frankly I dont understand and would like to know why really high magnesium would cause that reaction specifically.

Only water changes (or waiting a long time for coral incorporation) will bring down magnesium. Be sure to use a low magnesium salt mix to do so, like IO.

I expect the high magnesium stressed organisms not used to such chemicals, and they stopped growing. I'm not sure what exactly you mean by having a hard time maintaining calcium, but calcium and magnesium can coprecipitate to form mixed carbonate salts, so that may have happened.
