I am so glad that i did not buy one of these pumps... look at what one did to one reefers tank...

Dude, if it runs that hot then how does it keep heat outside the tank? It's like pressing a heater up against the glass.

I haven't check with Jonathan yet on how he mount the Vortech but if you use the plastic round rubber in between the pump and the tank then the heat won't be that hot. He has 3/4'' acrylic and may be he didn't use the rubber thing to seperate the pump and the tank.

Glass is a poor conductor of heat which likely prevents much transfer to the water. If I were to use it on an acrylic tank I'd be tempted to place a thin piece of cut glass in between as an insulator.

I think the glass transfers more heat to the water since acrylic is a better insulator. In this case the acrylic didn't transfer the heat to the water which is why the damage was done.

Ya. I sold my 6100 and bought a "new" wireless vortech. Im not very pleased.
I say "new" because I think that guy that sold it to me opened it and stuck the foam pad part onto the half of the pump that goes into the water. After reading the directions I'm pretty sure it goes on the dry side. Can anyone confirm this?

Foam pad goes in water, to keep animals out of the pump.

Not the foam that slips over the pump. The very thin pad that is a disk shape.

I have both tunze and vortech in my tank and each have their own advantage. The only thing is no comparison is the service behind the product. Tunze treat you like you own a Mercedes and Vortech treat you like you own a Ford.

The thin disk, that does not have any plastic on it, goes on the outside. The wetside should have a disk that is mounted on a plastic plate with 3 tabs that click into the wetside assembly. That goes on the inside. Hope that makes sense, LOL!

Edit: Cut 'n paste from the manual:
Attach the motor assembly
Apply the rubber gasket at the chosen location for the VorTech • pump, on the outside of your aquarium.

There is no foam that slips over the pump, thats plastic or rubber. The thin pad goes in the water.I really like my vortecs and i'm happy with them.

Ummmmm.... ya. There is a foam piece that goes around the outside of the "wet" part of the pump.
How come you say the thin pad goes on the wet side when CW just cut and pasted from the manual that says it goes on the dry side?

What i'm saying is the piece that you use to adjust the glass/acr clearance is not foam it is rubber or plastic and the one that goes in the tank is thin layer of foam''.

I have 2 of these on my acrylic tank for 3 months with no probs yet. my tank is 3/8" thick.

I do use the rubber pad on the outside per the instructions.

Maybe the thicker the acrylic the less heat transfers into the tank causing this?

How long were the pumps in the tank before this happened?

True:

glass heater tubes, glass beakers, glass labware, Pyrex cookware. Coffee is never served in a glass.
