A few questions:
Ok, so my first question is:
Should I have a canopy? I would love to hear your pros/cons, to help me decide. 2nd What paint can I use to hide my CL returns? I think it is Rustoleum, spray paint? Not for sure. Thanks!

I would try to stay with open top. due to heat issues. I have a cube that has a hood. it hold ways to much heat in for my liking

jumping fish is a downside to open top. Open top does look very nice with nice pendant, though.

I definately wont be doing open top! I have 4 cats, and one has already peed in the tank (this was a while ago, and when I was trying to finish the doors to the stand) I got lucky as that time there wasnt any water in the tank, but that would definately kill fish as the high ammonia. If anything I wont do a "canopy" but just like some painted ply that hides the egg crate and CL pipes.

simple answer is a canopy with no lid. use egg crate for the lid. basically 3 sides to make it look nice and a egg crate top for ventilation.

I prefer canopies unless it is a euro or rimless tank with pendant lighting. My canopies are completely enclosed with fans in the ends and exit holes on top. I installed doors for feeding and astetics and have piano hinges to completely open the front and top up for maintenance. No glass tops to hinder oxygen transfer and no eggcrate to hinder lighting.

I like the look of the open tops but the new tank has a canopy and it looks very nice. If you have a canopy and the tank is large, you are more likely going to need a chiller. You don't "have" to have one but it will help. It also depends on the ceiling above the tank. I have vaulted ceilings so a hanging light dosen't work and a fixture that sits on top of the tank has issues with moving it aside to work on the tank. I built some brackets to slide my 72" light back to give me about 6 extra inches to work in the front of the tank for coral/rock placement etc... Here is a picture of a fixture on an open tank:
