Angry ASM G2 pump failed !

Okay so I had the pump that came with my ASM G2 (bought it used) in my 58RR running to circulate the water and salt for a new set up on that tank !

Got into the house yesterday and caught a distinct smell of burnt electrical but couldn't pinpoint it !!!!

Well got the water parameters all set and went to set up the ASM G2 and realized the pump won't work now !!!!

Any ideas on what I should check on this thing ???

If you smelled burnt electric, the pump is toast You'll prob find that it is swelled and the impeller is stuck in the pump from the swelling.

IMO your best bet will be to get a EuroReef Sedra to replace the ASM Sedra. The ER's will pruduce more air and skim your tank better....they are pricey though, $135 IIRC with the venturi and all, ready to put on your skimmer.

Well I thought it might be that too so I pulled the front off and the impellar came out with no difficulty at all !

I would test it again, however, I would be wearing tennis shoes to insulate myself. If you have a GFCI outlet, even better.

If it doesn't spin in the pump when the impellar cover is off, maybe the impellar needs a little TLC. Sometimes you can fix minor problems, and sometimes you have to replace the impellar.

I doubt you'll be able to use a Euro-Reef Sedra pump on an ASM skimmer, because they have different fittings. I bought a used ASM G-3 just for the Sedra 5000 pump and found out that they have different fittings that won't match up whatsoever.

So I guess you would recommend NOT testing it by sticking my hand in the water and plugging it in then huh ?!?

You could, with shoes on and GFCI protecting you. Or plug it in, then use a voltage meter to verify the water is safe to touch. Or stick a ground probe in there.

I'd probably grab it firmly in one hand, and plug it in with the other. And post my results later, if still possible.

I bought a ASM G2 pump(sedra 3500) from custom aquatic, and it fits perfectly on my old ER 5-3. The Venturi is different on the G2 3500 but the Volute/venturi from my original ER 3500 fits perfect on the G2 3500.

I'm pretty sure the only difference between the ASM g2 3500 pump, and the ER 3500 is the venturi. The diameter is just a hair smaller for the ER.

My problem was the gray connection that had to align with the piece sticking out of the side of my skimmer.

If they will line up, the ER pump will produce more air.

Marc,

I think the Sedra 5000 is different for the ASM, but I havent used that model. The 3500 is the same.

And JC is correct, but You can get the ASM sedra to pull the same amount of air or more with a little magic on the venturi.

5.0,

Soak the whole pump in straight vinegar for an hour or 2, disassemble, clean everything with a toothbrush, and try again.

Keep your feet dry LOL.
