a lot of water noise from overflow
Hey guys. I've got a lot of noise coming from my overflow box, where the water drains down to my sump. I am planning on drilling the tank to make a CTC, but that won't happen for a few weeks. I've had to adjust the flow of my return pump to almost nothing to make the noise stop. Any suggestions on how I can get my water flow higher and no noise? Thanks
Cheers

How old is the tank?
Might need to let the slime coat build up. It will quieten down some with time.

it's about 6 months, still young, but the noise (which sounds just like a drain) hasn't gotten any quieter. There is a coating of brown algae (i guess) in the siphon tube.

What size PVC from the tank to the sump? I made mine go from 1" to 1.75" and that quited all sounds.

i use a 1" flex tube (green). From the fitting in the overflow is a nozzle which the tube goes over. It just ends in the sump

I'm gonna barrow a trick from CPR. If you have a strainer attachment to your bulkhead on the inside of the overflow you can drill a hole that will accept ridgid air tubing. Find an "O" ring that will fit over the ridgid tubing and slide it up and down the tubing untill the noise is at its quietest. You may need as much as 14 inches of ridgid tubing. this should help alot. It works on the same principal as a durso by venting the air trying to escape up the pipe to a level above the water line.

Of course you have to put the vent tube in the hole you drilled. the "O" ring prevents the tube from sliding all the way thru the hole and into your pipe. Silly me. Poor guy might be sitting at home in front of the tank sliding an o ring up and down a piece of ridgid air tubing wondering when things will quiet down.

I had the similar problem and this is what I did: changed PVC from 1" to 1.75", changed to a taller PVC in the overflow box so the water wasn't dropping from a height, drilled holes on the PVC. Also, I added pre-filter ( cylinder looking foam that goes on the PVC). there is also PVC like pipe that is mashed with holes all over the body of the pipe. That got rid of the noise completely.
