12V DC Clip-On Fan

I bought this DC fan at Walmart yesterday. It had a car cigarette lighter adapter on it.I cut off the cigartte adapter and wired an AC-DC 12V 830mA 17W wall type converter to it.The fan is rated at 12V 0.8A 10W.The fan does come on,but won't turn the blades. It just vibrates lightly.Any help is appreciated.TIA.

Well its probably rated at 10w to run the fan which doesn't include the startup demand. Your power supply can't handle the initial power draw so the motor won't turn. I would think you could place a capacitor inline to overcome this problem or buy a more powerful power supply.

I agree to put the capacitor in series with the power wire and fan. What size, i dont know.

Thank you.

Do I wire the capacitor between the hot and neutral leads of the power cord?

How can I find out what size capacitor I need?

If I look for a new converter, what ratings should I be looking for?

Goodness no!

You want to get a power supply rated at 12V 1A or more. I would shoot for at least 1.5A so that the power supply can handle the inrush current of the small motor.

If the motor does not start by spinning it with your finger, then it likely will not run with that PSU.... The psu is under powered and has too much ripple.
