Well I did it, I just bought a wild collected bonded pair. I dont know for sure yet what condition they are in but I have them in a 10 gal quarintine tank with 5 gal of water from the tank that they are going to be going in. All I have in the tank is a heater and an air stone. I hope that is ok.

Is the one you are buying established. Putting a new filter in there will do no good. These fish don't need to be cycling a filter. If you have some spare LR put it in there and maybe a small powerhead for circulation. Do you have a redundant filter you could steal from another tank?

Feed lightly and clean heavily untill you get your filtration fixed and good luck, those are some good looking clowns.

Make sure you put a cover on your tank. It would be a shame to have one of your fish go carpet surfing!!!!!!!! Not to mention 150 bucks down the drain.

I agree - put a net over the top of the tank. I lost a rare clown from jumping about a month ago and learned the hard way.

Of primary importance with these clowns is their very shy nature. If not hosted most of the Leuco's Ive have are frighteningly shy. Give them a rock or two to hide under. And yes they will jump out a lid is very important. Frequent water changes will alleviate the need for a complex filter system. Just dump a gallon from QT tank and add another from display tank on a daily (or more often than that based on water params) . Good Luck! They are my favorite! [Did my Avatar give that away ? ]

If I am going to try and breed them is it bad to put them into a tank with live rock and sand? Or would this invironment be better for them?
DLCKWOOD
Oh yeah, the water I used was from my already cycled tank and I added a new spong filter.

If you are using a single tank breeding set up I suggest live rock and DSB. If you plan on plumbing multiple tanks into one central sump go with empty tanks and a pot. Either way make sure you have a removable substrate for them to lay on and hope they don't like glass!!!! LOL

$175 seems pretty good for my area. I went to my LFS and he had one, which was priced at $600. He said that's the going rate for them now.... hmmm...

Hummm... If that is the going rate there I would hate to see the $100 A. ocellaris or the $200 maroons. WAY TOO HIGH!!!!

$600 for a spawning pair, sure, just right, maybe even a little low. But a single fish, no way.

JHardman - Yeah, I thought that was too high. He said that a pair of them would run me about 1200-1300, with a mated pair pushing 2000. Needless to say, I left the one there.

Just to let you know keefsama2003 my pair are not the ones that were first poster on this thread. My two are completely different ones with a different price. Still much less then the prices 3Tripnip
got from his LFS.

What he paid is pretty much average. You would pay more, about 2-3x more for "conditioned" fish, i.e. QT'ed for 4-6 weeks, eating prepared foods, not totally freaked out by people. But frankly finding someone selling conditioned clownfish is rare...
