Should Luminarc III reflectors come with a glass splash shield?

I just ordered 3, Luminarc III reflectors, coralvue ballasts and reeflux 12k bulbs from reefexotics but did not receive any glass shielding for the reflectors. Before I call them asking about it, I wanted to see if anyone using these has a glass shield. ReefExotics does not mention any shielding but I see the reflectors are designed to accomodate them.

Anyone using these have a glass shield? I guess I could have some cut for it but would there be anything I should know around heat resistance. Also, if your using them with a shield do you get any heat issues from enclosing them.

I see. I thought I had seen some with glass. Any idea if putting a glass shield would be problematic?

paul2new,

You say yours had glass shields? Anything special about the glass? Any heat problems? Are you running 400W bulbs?

I installed the glass shields in my Luminarc Mini's with no problems at all. I am running 250w bulbs and the temp of the reflector itself only went up about 10 degrees.

I do however have two fans blowing across the fixtures and my hood is open.

The temp of my reflectors is about 115 degrees

If you got the bare bone reflector (silver), you get no shield, if you ordered the stealth reflector(black) it does come with the glass cover. I ordered both and experienced that exact issue. I ended up taking the glass off of my stealth reflectors.

The vented lumenarc 3s come with glass shields too. I am not running the shield on mine.

Acrosteve,

stupid question but 115 F or C? By the way, I like how you used that "egg-crate" plastic for vents at each end. I need to build an open top hood as well and wondered what would look good for creating the side vents.

I may have to steal your idea

nyvp,

I have the silver non-vented reflectors with 400w bulbs. Any idea if the heat would be too much using a glass shield? I feel the slight loss of PAR on a 24" deep tank with 400s would be acceptable but I am concerned about heat build up

Note: When using MH donot use plain Glass it will shatter. Use tempered glass or glass specially for MH. MH fixtures that come with glas use expensive glass.

It is F.

I can stand a slight decrease in PAR because of how much easier it is to clean a flat piece of glass rather than 13 different aluminum surfaces with many more crevices that are subject to permanent pitting from salt build up.
